My 300 build (PICS)

Postby Tha_Stepside » Mon Nov 17, 2008 11:49 pm

Ok, I have gained a significant amount of knowledge from this site about the legendary ol 300 and now I have completed my build.

-300 bored 0.030 over with Speed Pro Hyper pistons
-Shot peened rods, ground crank
-Zero-decked block and head has been shaved 0.010" with three-angle grind, spring seat step was shaved for new valve springs.
-Very mild porting and polishing
-Crane 260H cam with lifters and dual spring valve springs
-Offy C intake and EFI exhaust manifolds with 600CFM Performer (I know its a big carb, but it was free, and its only temporary)
-MSD Blaster 2 coil and wires, mallory cap and rotors (all not in pics unfortunately)
-Rhinopac heavy duty clutch
-All painted with Caterpillar coulors seeing as I am a CAT mechanic I thought it would be a cool color for the engine.

Most excellent :!: You would gain another 20 hp and 15# of torque with a Cummins "Red Head" paint job though. :P

Thanks for the kind replies, its going in a 78' F150 4X4 flareside with 35" tires and 4.11 gears. I would have done a cummins paint job, but the only cummins engins I work on are grey and V24's. Almost all the CAT engines I work on have the yellow and black scheme for paint.

What a very nice job, I only disagree with the cam, the grind has been around for forever, same grind I used in the mid 80's and disliked then and now, put yourself a 212 to 214 duration at 110 lobe speration at about .450 to .500 lift and you will be amazed, 204 at 112 on the intake with the jugs and stroke you have is a waste of potential. always just an opinion, but one based on experience.

I love the yellow/black combo. The only paintjob on a 300 I've liked almost as much was a camouflage paint scheme (that one was awesome.)

Nice paint!

I'm a fan of CAT I6 motors so I think a 300 painted in CAT colors is a cool idea.

The higher duration, narrower LCA cam will produce higher peak torque more power at higher RPMs but it will also result in a narrower torque curve. For a lot of us, the virtually flat torque curve from 1800-3000 is the principal virtue of the 300. Nearly every cam manufacturer except CompCams grinds their towing/hauling and mid range street cams on a 112° LCA.

Looks badass.
I always go with dark Corporate blue on Ford motors, but I like the cat colors on there, too. (My flatbed wrecker has Cat power, so I'm used to seeing those colors)

I just stumbled on this thread, and I think yellow is a GREAT choice.
It would appear GREAT minds think alike.
Although in my case, I just couldn't bring myself to conform:

My friends call it the yellow submarine engine :)
It's a '75 300 and it'll go in my '66 econoline van.

-speed pro hypereutectic pistons 30 over
-melling torque cam
-milled head .030, valve job; ground, champered and polished crank
-new cam bearings & freeze plugs
-new sleeved guides

Got it back from the machine shop last week and am in the process of assembly.
The color is Daytona yellow from advanced auto parts. Bolts and pulleys are painted black.
I'm going to use the intake/exhaust manifold of a 240 until I can find
something better.

Cheers :D
