Thanks for the kind words. The blue is a Nissan color. Very close to the Pontiac engine blue from the 60's. The sidecover is Pioneer brand "as cast gray" from the local engine machine shop. It dries with little gloss. I'll post some additional engine pictures once completed.

My son has recorded our other six cyl. dirt cars for his cell phone ringer. I'll have him record and post a sound clip once we get it fired up.

I'm surprised that there weren't any replies about the pistons. Seems like a fairly regular topic.

I'm told by my machinist friend that the paint scheme is worth at least an additional 20 Hp.

Would the use of ARP head studs be of any consequence in a very mild-performance 300 rebuild - compared to stock head boolts? I am aware that head studs are often used, and recomended for, racing engine applications, but I am curious as to whether they are not so good for a nearly stock engine rebuild - I have heard one comment from a trusted person against their use in this case.

I happen to have a brand new set of ARP head studs and was planning on using them on my rebuild (hyper pistons, CR of 8.7 or less, mild P&P on 300 or 240 head, roller rockers, RV cam, stock 1V carb on rare 1V Edelbrock intake). Just want to know whether or not to use those studs vs re-using the stock head bolts.

The ARP stud are made from a harder grade of material. I don't have their information in front of me but I think it is around 180,000 psi steel. Consequently there is less stretch than with the stock head bolts. Little concern at stock compression ratios.

I can see no detrimental side effects from using them in your application. What are the comments you are hearing? Why would they not work....just curious not looking to argue the point.

I have another 300 which is a bit milder than the one discussed in this thread. The compression ratio isn't much different than yours. I re-used the stock head bolts in it and this will be the forth season of racing with it. No troubles and it gets run much harder than a typical street driven 300.

I think you are in that happy position where either choice will work fine.

Okay, I'll ask about the pistons. Did you sonic check the block before the .050 overbore? Did you use or consider a partial fill of "Hard Bloc" to help support the walls for the big overbore? Have you run this bore before without problems?

Very nice engine by the way!

I race a vintage dirt car with a 300. The engine I am running now has been ran for 7 seasons, freshened up 2 times in the 7 years. I am running about 12 1/2 to 1 comp. forged 390 pistons. I will admit that it has a ton of blow by now and I am sure the cylinders are worn out. I don't know if I have just been lucky or not but I feel like I couldn't ask for better service from an engine. I turn this engine 6000 to 6300. Workingtomuch and I usualy race each other at least twice a year,I hope this engine runs as long as mine has even if he out runs me with it. I have a lot of faith in his engine building. I am going to build another one and I will run the 390 pistons and not worry about it.

Thanks Andy,

Good to know. I always hear that the .050 over is too much for performance use. Sooo maybe not!

I like to kid about who out runs who between working2much and I, but his 16 yr. old son Adam and my 14 yr. old grandson Aaron is who we both need to worry about this racing season. I look for Adam's #00 and Aarons #53 to be the ones to beat this yr.

Here is the 00. 1929 Chevy sedan with 250 Chevy six power. No specs on engine internals. We bought this one. Compression has been bumped, aluminum intake, headers and a nice rumpy cam. Really winds up. May get a Ford 300 next winter. We will see......

When we built Aaron's car we have tried our best to make a good ch--y. The car is a 34 ch--y coupe but we improved it with a 240 ford six. It has a comp.cam 515 lift 290 dur. ross pistons, Offy intake, 194 160 valves,
lightened and knife edged crank and a few other goodies. It has a top loader 3 speed with a jeep T150 top and shifter and a Franklin quick change. The car is in the paint shop now.I will post pics. as soon as we get it painted and lettered.

No I didn't take any pics, probably should have. I bought this engine used about 6 yrs ago. I pulled the pan and checked the bearings, which were like new. The engine was suposedly been freshened just before I bought it and it looked like it was. I ran this engine one time last fall at the Cornhusker nationals. It has about the same power as my 300, just at a different RPM.power band very different. The crank has the counter weights narrowed at the base and tapered down to about 1/4 of an inch at the outside. The work looks pretty rough like it was done with a grinder. The surface is about as rough as the stock casting. In other words it is not polished. It seems to be balanced OK Winds up very quick and no vibration. The engine was said to have ran in an old late model back east somewhere. It came with a clifford valve cover and a, I think kinda rare,
Precision Engine Service aluminum side cover. We are going to try it. If it blows up we will have the pan off pretty soon other wise it may be a while before I can get some pics.

Those race cars are the coolest!

Love the style.
300- mild head porting - 204/214 cam - 1.73 rollers - 2.5" exhaust DEAD AND GONE!

New truck- 71 F-100 302/AOD. Missing my 300 dearly. 302 belongs in a mustang, lifters tick, headers sound annoying, vibrates, is ugly, etc.
