The worst bike ride of my life - May 3, 2003. Fifty miles, uphill through rain and sleet on a mountain bike for MS. I loved it. Came back three more times to make a difference.

This year: from Irvine to Oceanside to San Diego - 156 miles ridden with $3380 raised to help fight Multiple Sclerosis. Thanks guys!

But if its .001 too tight EVERYBODY KNOWS!!

Is this video kinda what 80Broncoman was referring to in his sig? It does look like something was under a bit of tension...

When your making upwards of 2500+ hp and crazy amounts of boost, somethings under tension.

Ouch.

Bruce Crower told me once that the pulling diesels are making 10,000+ ft/lbs of torque and run 100+ psi of boost. He also said that to keep the pistons from immediately vaporizing under such heat, they plumb big nozzles under each one, which spray motor oil at them.

I would never go against the word of Bruce Crower(and i feel bad for even saying this) but i doubt 10,000 ft lbs out of a 500-600 cube diesel. Ive seen what goes inside of the alky burning 4 turbo tractors, and they are similar, but in my mind that much stress would need bigger components then whats already put into them. As you can see the blocks are the weak point when that much power is made anyway

Dang! Blew the block right off the pistons and rods!

If it breaks, it just means you didn't build it well enough

I don't know, it's all way above my head in terms of personal engine building experience. Pulling motors are up there with top fuel/funny cars in the stratosphere of power sports. I sent Crower an email stating some of my opinions on his (new at the time) 6-stroke diesel water-injection design, and I left my phone number. Sure as heck, he called me up 2 days later at my house! I took a picture of the caller id on my phone.. Anyway, the guy is very intelligent and his level of knowledge is unreal. I'm sticking by what he said! 10,000 ft/lbs :D

"If it breaks, it just means you didn't build it well enough" so sayeth Crash.

Not necessarily, in this case appears builder was able to build more power than the available engine block can handle.
Maybe next built he can find a stronger block, or turn the wick down just a little, doubt it, after, all the idea is win.

Bruce Crower is no armchair expert. He knows whereof he speaks and can translate it into hardware. I met him at Bonneville a few years back; he was working with a Flathead Ford powered streamliner trying to break 300 MPH. They did.

Was that Ron Main's Flatfire 'liner?

I like 21st century technology applied to vintage engines in that way. They claimed on their website that the engine cranked out over 700HP ....that is very awesome!

If you think about it, a flathead and a turbo are extremely compatible technologies.
Flatheads have low compression ratios and lots of room to open the ports up for monster flows plus the advantage of very low valvetrain inertias. Turbos require low compression ratios and monster flows and can push the engine to RPM levels where low valvetrain inertia becomes a real advantage. The real question is how they ever built the bottom end of a flattie to withstand that kind of BMEP and make that kind of power. Between Bruce Crower and the late Dick Landy, there was some major gearhead genius involved in that build.

I believe they used billet 4 bolt main caps and a custom main girdle for the lower end. That is impressive how a 3 main engine could endure that much stress. I forgot how much boost they said the engine made, I'll have to go back to their website to refresh my memory, it shows the engine in various stages of assembly, and there is a lot of trick pieces in it for sure.

No matter how well supported the mains are, there's still only 3 of them. The crank must be forged out of Unobtainium. Back "in the day" Landy used to make insane amounts of HP in his Pro-Stock Hemi but getting this thing to hang together for 8 miles at a time at Bonneville under that much boost is to my mind way more impressive

Going with the topic, Crower also told me about how he had stayed up late into the night building an engine for his daughter's S2000 race car. He used a set of his titanium rods, but in his late night haste, installed a floating pin a little too tight. It seized up at about 8000 rpm, blew the piston into fragments, and the titanium rod whirled around and cut the block in half. He said he was able to re-use the rod. Apparently, Crower titanium rods are durable?
