Duraspark II questions

Postby coolguy1419 » Mon Nov 30, 2009 8:28 pm

I've got a 86 F150 300 4.9l that I am wanting to convert to the Duraspark II ignition. I am wanting to know what parts I'm going to need to do this. I know I have to have the wireing harness, coil and the igntion box. Can I use my current Distributor or need to get a different one? If I need to get a different one do I need a single or dual vacum? I was going to get all the parts from a truck in a junkyard but haven't had any luck finding any! I think I am just going to buy new if I can figure out what parts I need. Any help would be appreciated.

if you have the truck why do you want to convert it...? the FI dizzy works miles better than the duraspark for controlling Spark...

Or are you saying you have the Engine out of an 86 f150?

I've got an 86 truck and 86 motor. I am switching intake carb and manifolds so I need to switch ignitions right? I was just wanting to know what parts I can use and what I need to get.

yep if you do away with the Injection...

you will need to rework the pumps with a by-pass regulator for fuel pressure these are roughly 100.00

is their something wrong with the injection now?

The 86 F150 was carbed with the evil feedback system, efi didn't show up until 87.

As for finding a DS2 dizzy I got one off an 86 F250. I don't know if DS2 went beyond 86 in the heavier trucks.

Can I use a dizzy off of any ford motor or does it have to be off a 300? It's a feedback carb on the truck pain in the butt!

Yes you do need to switch distributors; the TFI distributor will not give any centrifugal or vacuum advance when you disable the computer.

I suggest using a DS2 distributor to trigger a GM HEI ignition module firing your existing TFI coil. This conversion is much simpler than using the DS2 module and you already own the TFI coil.

Check out www.gofastforless.com for wiring details and some good, basic reading on ignitions.

Here are some part numbers to use for cross-reference (hope this helps)

Duraspark distributor: 30-2669 (Cardone) fits 74-87 Ford Truck (from Oreilly's)
Rotor: D219 (BWD Borg Warner)
Cap: C193 (BWD)
Cap adapter: C193A (BWD)

I used a Mallory Hyfire 6A Ignition system with a Mallory 29216 coil.

After many adjustments to the advance springs, I concluded that the springs as installed were pretty close to optimum (for my application).

In doing this would it eleminate the computer? Also would you need an ignition module or does the GM HEI take care of that? This conversion sounds much simpler.

The HEI is the ignition module and Joe is right...quite simple to set up.

Correct; the Duraspark distributor does not use a computer and if you use the GM HEI module you do not use the Duraspark module. It is indeed much simpler. Without the computer you will need an earlier type (non-feedback) carburetor.

You MUST find a 300 or 240 distributor; the V8 units won't fit, neither will the small-block Ford sixes (170, 200, 250).
