Crank and Cam For 300 inline 6

Postby 78FordF100Custom » Tue Apr 24, 2012 7:29 pm

I have a 1978 Ford F-100 Custom with a all stock 300 inline 6. Engine was rebuilt so it is really super clean, but I was wondering where are some sites or dealers or sellers that have a Cam and Crank for a 300. I have looked and I can't find one.

I have bought headers, four barrel intake. I am gonna swap over to a C6 Auto Trans with a 205 trans for case. and 4:11 gears front and rear. I am wanting to have a really strong and powerful engine. I just need to know of a place to get the cam and crank.

Comp, Isky, Schneider, etc., make cams for the 300. Try Summit Racing, JEGS, etc. The stock crank is more than adequate for most modified applications.

what size cam would be good for the 300 if you dont mind me asking. And before you ask I aint worried about my gas bill going up at all.

The cam choice depends in part on what you're building it to do and in part on what other mods you are planning
1996 F-150 (tow missile)
1993 Mustang 5.0 (hot rod and auto-x monster)
1982 Tiga Formula Ford (SCCA racecar)
2013 Hyundai Elantra Coupe (daily driver)

I want the and heads to be bored .30 over and heads and block shaved. I want it to be a stroker engine. I am just gonna get the case iron longer connector rods. I am gonna have a four barrel intake with a 600 carb with a 1 1/2 in spacer I want to have headers. and electric fan , fuel pump. and tran mission cooler.

Oh boy where to start.

I guess the good news:

The four barrel, spacer, headers, fan, trans cooler are all sound choices, as is boring the cylinders, and cutting the block and heads.

But: unless you are planning on towing 747's out onto the runway there is no need for a stroker crank, and by the way, you would not be able to fit longer rods in with a stroker crank. Factory rods are forged, not cast. The head is where you should concentrate - it is too restrictive for the engines 4 inch stroke, much less a stroker crank. Bowl work and maybe bigger valves with screw-in studs and roller rockers will all be plusses. Good luck.

The build depends on what/how you are going to use your truck which is...?
