You right, :bang: I stand corrected wonder what happened they usually show the second part the following week.
A bad day Drag Racing is still better than a good day at work!

What trick? Not sure what you're referring to. Thanks.

I believe he is referring to the spray bottle method of determining which cylinder is not firing.

By spraying water on each primary header tube, you will identify which one is not firing because the header pipe temperature on the non-firing cylinder will be far less than the other tubes, and therefore the water sprayed on it will not vaporize as it does with the others.

X2 that is exactly right. You will know as soon as the water hits the last pipe.

It works just about as well on cast manifolds too.

I use the TSSSsssss method:

Saliva on a finger tip. Same principal. Test equipment is always with me.

Pass the Neosporin.

Yeah, the spray bottle they used is the "white collar" approach. The FTF method is the good ole "blue collar" approach.

i think 'white collar' is to use an IR thermometer or one of those handheld thermal cameras. Blue collar is spray bottle, and fingertip is plaid collar/ dirty wife beater.

using snow is the 'fur collar' method. I've used snow before on air cooled motorcycle engines.

I can see how that would identify a dead cylinder, but it wouldn't tell you much about an intermittent miss. I asked because of the mention of a "mild miss" and "not running right." The IR thermometer might indicate such a problem, because it would be few degrees cooler (depending upon how intermittent it is, LOL).

Thanks for the explanation.

Nothing found yet

WOW I just found this thread. :o
Found Part 1 online, kinda sketchy, those look like older 76cc heads?
So based on what they said Im gonna assume
9,32cr at .030 deck
A 4bbl intake and what else, a 600 Holley (probably a $700 version)
Comp 268H cam at 218-218-110 .456 .456 as they noted
Headers, maybe full length if we are lucky

The WerbyFord Gonkulator says
Torq 331 at 3000
Powr 240 at 4300
I'm kinda glad they didnt run part 2 yet so I could try to predict it.
Then again, lets HOPE they run part 2.

It's looks like you might never see part 2 by the way things are going. :rolflmao:

And even if you do, I seriously doubt the compression would be that high with pistons that short. You are talking about a piston that is almost 1/4" shorter then the stock ones.

Yikes I missed that "240 flattop" #1147 piston.
If so then the Gonkulator says
7.34cr [yawn] and .223 deck [yawn].

Torq 286 at 3000
Powr 210 at 4300

I hope they just goofed and think that piston will give near zero deck, maybe they delayed the show cuz they reordered some pistons that actually fit??? Hope so. Maybe we should contact them and tell em somehow? What a waste of a nice build.

ha ha yeah, 7.3 cr would be good for a blown motor... maybe.

they said they were using the stock rods, and even did a bunch of work to them, but maybe they are using some trick longer rod out of another application.. v8 or something? 240 rods maybe?

Not with cast pistons! :D

Nope not 240 rods. 240 Rods with 240 pistons on a 300 crank is not something that would work to well.

I used to have a close source that produced a lot of the Powerblock and Spike TV stuff at RTM productions. He said that their target audience is for the most part, totally clueless about tech stuff like this and they don't even know the difference between a camshaft and a crankshaft. So take that for what its worth about what you see on these type of shows.

Nope, wish I was joking! The average person that watches those shows knows very little about the subject matter of the show, thats why the get the ratings they do. He told me that most shows are still way over most guys knowledge level and they have to "dumb them down" so they aren't just completely lost. Things could have changed now, this was their thinking when it first came on the scene a little over 10 years ago. Just for giggles, do you know what Joe Elmore did before he came to Hot Rod TV? That will sort of give you an idea of the kind of people that host their shows....

I had to look (from his bio):

For many years, Joe has hosted a Nashville PBS-based show called “Tennessee Crossroads” which is now one of the highest-rated shows of its kind in the country. Crossroads is a travel show that unveils fascinating people and places Joe finds on the two-lane highways of the mid-south. It’s earned several Emmy Awards and countless nominations.

As if that wasn’t enough, Joe also purses his longtime passion for music. Joe played bass in a variety of bands in his earlier years, including Bill Black’s Combo, a group formed by one of Elvis Presley’s first sidemen. He was immersed in the historic music of the “Memphis Sound” during its heyday and backed up some of the legends of rock and R&B.

More recently, Joe staged a clever “comeback” by combining his writing and singing talents with his affinity with the American car culture. The result: a one-of-a-kind CD called “Gearheads”, featuring songs with captivating car connections. He combined old-time favorites like “Mustang Sally” and “Little GTO” with originals he wrote that embrace his personal passion for hot rods.

Keeping in line with Joe’s mission of giving back, a portion of the proceeds from the CD are earmarked for the National Autism Association.

He was born in Paragould, Arkansas, received a Masters Degree in Communications, worked in film production, public relations, and TV news before heading to Nashville to amp up his career. Joe’s endless credit list includes PM Magazine, Opry Backstage on The Nashville Network and numerous TV specials, in addition to songwriting credits.

Joe loves interacting with people. And, at a podium, he can captivate an audience with his amazing experiences, inimitable insights and charming antidotes. Whether it’s talking about hot rods to a group of “car guys” or talking about his many Crossroads adventures to a general audience, he connects with listeners on a level that is genuine, engaging, uplifting and fulfilling.

Well my point was that while he does have a pretty impressive bio, he had/has zero automotive experience or knowledge prior to coming to RTM. So I guess if they think their viewers don't know the difference between a camshaft or a crankshaft, they might as well get a host that doesn't either. :rolflmao:

I think it's been quite a while since Joe actually did much of the mechanical work on that show. They have a couple younger guys that do most of the work now.

I never thought of hot rodding as a spectator sport, but that's what it has become. Same thing as the typical fan watching Monday night football who hasn't held a pigskin in twenty years (or maybe ever).

And just like a football game, the Powerblock TV show will have its share of "Monday Morning Quarterbacks" to expound on what should have been done.

Haha yeah... well you know ...the ad revenue drives programming, and smart people generally dont buy things just because they saw an add for it.

same reason the folks on shows like 'american chopper' spend more time yelling at each other, than actually doing something. idiots like to watch people yell at each other, and idiots buy stuff just because they see an ad for it.

same reason speed (which had huge viewership) went to a 'multi sport' format featuring college football and NASCAR... even though tons of people watch MotoGP... those people don't go out and buy motorcycle jackets just because they saw an add for them.

we're just lucky to have anything close to a show like 'powerblock' to watch.

The way the carb was mounted in the video clip I saw of it on the dyno. I would say it's the Offy DP. And it was a holley vac. secondary 4V. So I'm guessing they used the 390 cfm holley. :?

Here's the video clip. The 300 starts on 0.33 of the video.

The way the carb was mounted in the video clip I saw of it on the dyno. I would say it's the Offy DP. And it was a holley vac. secondary 4V. So I'm guessing they used the 390 cfm holley. :?

Here's the video clip. The 300 starts on 0.33 of the video.

in the parts list it shows a Holley 470CFM truck avenger carb listed. on the new website.
