How crazy am I?

Postby goodsteel53 » Wed Mar 11, 2009 3:43 pm

My 240 block is completely shot, so I'm in the market for either a 240 or a carburated 300. Found one fairly clean in a junk yard that hand turns by the crank for $150 on my pallet. Will it bolt up to my original 3 speed bell housing, and will my starter and manifolds from my 240 interchange? Motor mounts the same? It's been years, but I can do this!

So you found a 300 and you are asking if it will bolt up to the bell that your currently have with your 240? In a word, yes. The blocks are the same, except when they switched to EFI, as which point the fuel pump boss was no longer milled.

So unless they are selling you an EFI 300 (4.9) you should be golden. Starter etc all are identical.

thanks much cdherman! I'm about to head over to do the deal this morning. The motor has a carb (not sure yet which one, but NOT a single.. I have one of those by Ford on my 240). I did notice the distributor appears to be different than my points/condenser model, and doesn't have the usual two flat metal clips holding the cap down. Electronic ignition? Also.. the head has six allen bolts screwed into the top of the head at angles, like injectors might have been there (on the passenger/carb/manifold side). Is it possible to take an EFI 300cid, and convert to carb? I feel like a kid again!

The 300 doesn't have a 1bbl carb? If not, then it's aftermarket and someone has done some work to the engine in one form or another. The stock 300 came with a 1bbl Carter the same as the 240.

It's possible they put an aftermarket distributor on there as well (guessing).

Also, you can both convert an EFI 300 to carb, or put an EFI head onto a carb engine to gain some compression. If so, you're already getting an engine that's had some work done! :)

The allen heads are more than likely plugs for the AIR that was removed. Like was said, if it doesn't have a 1BBL its been modified.

I own it! It's being taken out of a 76 F100, and put in my wifes "Chevy truck" to bring home in a few days, for $150. I took cell phone pics today as my digi has dead batteries! I'll post pics for ID help. Ron... "AIR" removed? I don't know that acronym.

Was it originally from the '76?
The AIR was an emissions air injection system that was added in later years. It was a long pipe that ran the length of the engine and ported air into each cylinder exhaust or something like that. My '81 was too old for it so I don't know exactly how it works. However, if it was in a '76, it obviously didn't need it and was deleted.

Awesome deal on the engine. $150? I'd take it. I spent twice that on just the intake/carb setup I'll be putting on soon.

Just make sure the 300 junkyard motor has less than a couple million miles on it, and it should run great.

Got the 300 home and stored! Just pulled the 240 out yesterday, and plan on getting the new one in this week. Seller says he accidently left the clutch housing assembly on the flywheel, and would like it back. What would be a fair offer for it? I've made 4 trips out to his yard, and don't mind sending him the money. I've got pics of everything so far... is it not possible to directly post/attach pics to this reply. Oh.. the carb IS a Carter YF.
