In a discussion with Chad I started thinking about carb hats. Do they reduce airflow? Are some carb hats better than others? Anyone with some experience on this have some tips?

I think the open top gave better performance in the Engine Masters show. I love the show because everything is done on a dyno.

Hell, I don't remember if they tested the carb hat.

It is funny that you bring this up. I was just researching different hats, bonnets, or plenums. Whatever you want to call it.

The best one I came up with is this: https://torqstorm.com/product/torqstorm-carb-hat/

I will also give you a list of others I found:

Procharger
Vortex
Airraid
K&N
Spectre Performance
Offenhauser ( Best Price!!)
VintageInlines

You also have to look at the diameter of the opening. They always say more air / cool air is better.

"...Do they reduce airflow?..." (from what?)
take a look at oem - less restriction than that, so "No".
My reason is "cooler air" (compressed). Not feedin frm over the mediumies" ("tubes") I'm puttin on. (The last set
of CI headers, as Matt drove in the back door to haul away the remaining CI inventory, Will shipped these out the frnt door).

The best trick (4 me) will B figerin out how ta go frm round (Matt's carb hat to match my VC) to rectangle (the fresh air tube on the bronk's grill) w/the hose, adaptors or whatever. So far Spectre can't help. Curse of the rest0modder - enuff prts sourcing...

What about what used to be called, ''stand-off'' above a carb's venturi? This was a problem with pancake-type air filters of the last century [remember that?], and certain types of carb...

sure, don't just cite - list a reference. I cant C how a 3 inch open 'hole' is NOT less restrictive thana typical AC housing.

65coupei6- yes that torquestorm looks capable-I will look at the rest of the list also. thanks
And yes thanks about the airflow/standoff issues brought up. I was listening to a couple of friends talking, one a long time race car builder, and he had experimented with at least one carb hat and went back to a regular air cleaner set-up. Keeping in mind he builds high output race motors and he wins occasionally. Just wanted to get some feedback; I have noticed some carb hats look shorter than others at least in pics and some of them have two inlet holes/snorkel openings. Thanks for the responses.
