Re: Importing a 4.0L Engine into the USA

Based on what was said, I would think so. Myself, I wouldn't hesitate to install one in an older hot rod like a Mustang or Maverick. Re: Spotting a 144, 170 and 200cui six?

Hi, the quick way to tell a 200 from a 144 or 170 is the freeze out plugs. A 200 has 5 plugs on the passenger side and the others have 3. The 200, 170, and 144 have 3 bolts for the water pump, and the 250 has 4. You could easily check the casting number on the block and head to see what you got. It...

Importing a 4.0L Engine into the USA

After responding to a thread about a Barra engine, I did some more research about importing engines into the US and came up with the following. In 2010, the EPA came out with regulations covering the importation of vehicles and engines into the United States. Basically, a vehicle over 25 years old c...

You might want to look for an 8-inch out of an early 6 cyl Maverick.
They were 4-lug and usually came with a 2.79 or 3.00 ratio.

A forged piston will take more abuse from high compression/boost than a stock or hypereutectic.
Forged pistons will deform before failing; stock and hypereutectic will crack/shatter.

Is it worth $900-$1000 for a set?
Depends on your pocketbook and how hard you plan on driving.

Nathan, Do you still have the bottom half of the motor available? If so what parts do you have left and what are you asking for them? Thanks I'm curious about the JE forged pistons/balanced rods. What is the bore size of the pistons, and the recess volume? What would you want for these two items?

As mentioned previously, in the later years the 200 and 250 used the same head. The 200 was produced in the early 80's and can be found in the Fairmont/Zephyr/Mustang/LTDII. The casting code starts with E0 or E1 and has the largest log head volume of 1420cc. Just another place to find the better head.
