My truck [1986 F150 with 4.9L & Duraspark] has a Carter YF 4901 S carburetor, which was came from a 1970 F350. This was chosen for its pre-EGR calibration. It works well and returns decent gas mileage.

They will work. 1987 was the first year for fuel injection. Sometimes a little metal needs to be ground off due to slight interference with the alternator mounting bracket.

Sounds like a vacuum leak, to me. Perhaps cleaning the engine loosened a vacuum line and while taking the initial drive, something came loose, causing the erratic idle. The towing capacity will be limited by the F150 rating. Keep in mind that the 300 / 4.9L engine was available in F600s... it will tow whatever you throw at it, but slowly! :)
