Reading Ford supplied information on another forum, I saw that in 1982 a different camshaft [reduced overlap] was specified for all 300 [4.9L] engine manual / transmission trucks with 2.47 or 2.75 gear ratios for 49 state models.

I, too, am using MSD 6AL ignition box and have for many years. It works quite well, but it is hard on the distributor cap and rotor. Mine seem to need replacement @ about 25-30K miles. My truck [1986 F150 with 4.9L & Duraspark] has a Carter YF 4901 S carburetor, which was came from a 1970 F350. This was chosen for its pre-EGR calibration. It works well and returns decent gas mileage.

They will work. 1987 was the first year for fuel injection. Sometimes a little metal needs to be ground off due to slight interference with the alternator mounting bracket.
