I have used my work scopes because the ear tips seal so well. Again on a screw driver lightly placed on area of interest. I have learned some interesting things.

I pulled all the plugs, all looked good, I spun each pushrod. As I cranked the crankshaft around. All well adjusted. The crankshaft turned evenly, quietly, with all the plugs out. It’s not my noise,
I went all shade tree with a rope to hold the valve up
and removed the spring. Guide is still solid. Spring is still as undamaged. I will swap em out and continue my quest for the racket.

I removed the valve cover, again, it looks like the valve spring on the 3rd cylinder exhaust is not square under the retainer. It is a rotator. Is it possible the rotator has failed. Replaced the fuel pump, the spring was broken, soooo sure I had it... but no!
Pulled the Distributor and oil pump drive all good.
I drive this thing like crazy. I think I’ll build another block and prepare for disaster. Must be some rod or wrist pin. Maaaaan!

Well, I don’t think so. I just replaced the clutch, flywheel, pilot bearing (swap to roller) and throwout bearing trying to chase the sound and fix the input from spinning with the clutch in. Shorty the old 78 has a z bar and mechanical clutch fork. No hydraulics back then.
I’ll examine the linkage for damage. I’ll check for full clutch release. Good idea!

Frenchtown Flyer, well it sure sounds like that. A few related details, I use a TOD (floor shift 4speed with 4 as an overdrive) with a 3.70 gearset and I get to that OD by 50mph or so. That technique really makes that 3 speed gearset with the OD seem like a toploader. I swapped to a brass pilot bear...

This was my old set up.
Exact same parts except throttle cable bracket.

PS: fuel level adjustment was mandatory after swinging to the new position. Carb mounting pad tilts to rear and the sight plug is now on passenger side. You get the idea!

My Comp Cam 252, 240 head, 390 Holley combo pinged like crazy on 91 octane pump gas. New small gap brackets, heavier springs, and a cranked vacuum diaphragm spring, really helped. Runs great with the larger shooter.
So generally, with a single plane front to back orientation is the best to minimize this... pain?

My carb head valve cover bolts would not fit in those built in “washers” in the silicone rubber gasket I wanted to use with my fuel injected valve cover. I just clipped the “washers” with some cutters in 4 places each. Just so my bolts would drop in. Money!

I recently played the starter game.
I use the fuelie exhaust manifolds on mine.
There is a parts house starter info problem. Fit all starters don’t fit mine.
I bought a starter that did not fit. Shim problems and nose differences, wow. With the header spacing deal,
this would have been a battle.

It was happier with the 190 degree thermostat.
I started with the fan wired solid to battery cable terminal...sensor actuated.
I sweated running the battery down. It stayed way cooler under hood. (Battery never discharged)

And my scenario continues. Recap, head replaced, cam swap, electric fan swap. Then motor stalled as fan cut on (repaired with wiring change and relay addition and now an air temp radiator switch) I swapped alternators and replaced the regulator while I was convinced of voltage drop. So after some testing and observing, when the fan cut on, the idling engine would stall. Not from low battery charge or poor alternator output, battery voltage held. Should have done the alternator shop deal....
I had to have a first generation small case.
That bracket jams the alternator right up against a heat shield and the exhaust manifold. I was afraid I could not get good clearance for connections.
I really think my stock alternator is 40 amps.

Sure, I have meters and tools. I did not think the alternator was broken just a bit undersized. Ignition would shut off at idle, I thought that meant low voltage once the battery was depleted from carrying the the new fan. I’ll check it when I’m back in town. I’m hopeful since a 60 amp carries yours...

Use exhaust manifold clips and studs as shown by Frenchtown Flyer and others to keep the efi exhaust manifolds from drifting out from under said washers on the carb head.
I really struggled till I got the clips on. Mine went right on with the alternator bracket modification as explained earlier.

I was 2 deep in 300 carb heads. Dropped them off at Wheelers in Cullman Alabama. 1 week later they called.
Both cracked.
Back out we go... 3rd one good!!
