I recently played the starter game.
I use the fuelie exhaust manifolds on mine.
There is a parts house starter info problem. Fit all starters don’t fit mine.
I bought a starter that did not fit. Shim problems and nose differences, wow. With the header spacing deal,
this would have been a battle.

It was happier with the 190 degree thermostat.
I started with the fan wired solid to battery cable terminal...sensor actuated.
I sweated running the battery down. It stayed way cooler under hood. (Battery never discharged)

And my scenario continues. Recap, head replaced, cam swap, electric fan swap. Then motor stalled as fan cut on (repaired with wiring change and relay addition and now an air temp radiator switch) I swapped alternators and replaced the regulator while I was convinced of voltage drop. So after some testing and observing, when the fan cut on, the idling engine would stall. Not from low battery charge or poor alternator output, battery voltage held. Yep, you are right, no relay in my setup. I ran it off solenoid “I” post.

Should have done the alternator shop deal....
I had to have a first generation small case.
That bracket jams the alternator right up against a heat shield and the exhaust manifold. I was afraid I could not get good clearance for connections.
I really think my stock alternator is 40 amps.

Sure, I have meters and tools. I did not think the alternator was broken just a bit undersized. Ignition would shut off at idle, I thought that meant low voltage once the battery was depleted from carrying the the new fan. I’ll check it when I’m back in town. I’m hopeful since a 60 amp carries yours...

Use exhaust manifold clips and studs as shown by Frenchtown Flyer and others to keep the efi exhaust manifolds from drifting out from under said washers on the carb head.
I really struggled till I got the clips on. Mine went right on with the alternator bracket modification as explained earlier.

I was 2 deep in 300 carb heads. Dropped them off at Wheelers in Cullman Alabama. 1 week later they called.
Both cracked.
Back out we go... 3rd one good!!
Sooooo I’m getting ahead on freshened heads!!
Excited about cam upgrade.

Install a 240 head! The Ford 300 in-line six head can be replaced with the head off of a 240 cubic inch inline six. Smaller combustion chamber gives a higher compression ratio!

My advice here is to use the manifold clips discussed by Frenchtown Flyer and others. Easy to research using the search function.
My split manifolds age great. Without clips they migrated then leaked regardless of gaskets etc...
Clips are only needed when used on non fuel injected heads!

My 1978 F100 with 300 and TOD was best on Interstate with 3.25. Presently I have 3.70 on Truetrac with the same TOD 4 speed. I gave up a smidge on top end but like the truck better overall.

I have really had to make "repairs" to get by. I get that.
My 300 bottom end has been so durable I just kept the oil up, and kept driving. This crank ding deal, whew.

Well, my experience was that a ding resulted in a low spot easy to see, also a high spot that would be deadly. The minimum is a turning it to insure no high spot. My search for a crank was short, I found plenty. I personally would find a solid core. Ease of finding parts is one of my favorite aspect...

cylinders really keep velocity up in the ports and that negates big port volume in those open plenem

My 1978 f100 has a mid sump. I changed to a newer block, but it was no big deal. I drilled the plug out of the dipstick hole on the block. Then, used a steel brake line to fashion the tube. I used the old stick that was on my original motor, original pan and pickup. Factory look! Great functionality...

Spare parts need a coating!

This interest of mine is really causing a build up of heads, bells, transmissions, and ect...
I live in an area of high humidity and am worried about rust on my castings.
What should I apply that prevents rust and lasts a while?

Today I pulled a NP 435 from a yard! It came from a Bull Nose with a hydraulic clutch and a carbed 300. Let's see, block, head, header, Clifford, and now a NP435 transmission. I have a project, but I don't know what it is!

I am using comp cam's lifters with my 252. They have been OK. Check previous posts concerning new lifters on a used cam. I have gotten away with it for sure. Not all the authorities agree with that for sure. I think what would have been best is to use the original lifter set for the cam matched lift...
