You need a dial back timing light to really see what you have. You may be stuck with 12 degrees depending on your centrifugal total.
36-38 degrees is the desired total without vacuum @ 2700-2800 rpms.

This is a wild guess, but is it possible all the lifter plungers are bottomed out & the lifter plunger has not pumped up to the snap ring. Take the rocker arm assy off the head. Remove the distributor & with a drill spin the oil pump shaft to get line pressure. That will get the plungers to ...

Re: Valve train clatter

How is your oil pressure???
Your valve springs are not involved with this condition, but you need close to 100# seat pressure.
Sometimes it takes several minutes to have the hydraulic lifters to respond to a half turn of adjustment from zero adjustment.

I like the MSD box & their high end cost coils. If you can keep heat away from any coil its an improvement. The Ford TCI coil also has low primary resistance which is a plus.
Distributor advance curve is the key to improved idle, power, drive ability & economy.

If you are using an electric fuel pump, but routing it through the mechanical pump this can also cause vapor lock. The mechanical pump heats the fuel & aggravates the condition.
The best thing to do is delete the mechanical pump & run just the electric pump.
