In my many years of rebuilding these carbs you need to check the covers for the power valve and accelerator pump for flatness as people tend to over tighten the screws and warp them. You can take them and sand them on a flat piece of sand paper to straighten them. When the power valve cover is warpe...

I think that what FTF was talking about was having air trapped in the back of the head. It will over heat the rear cylinder unless it has coolant. Ford built them with the carb pad level. You can mark the balancer in degrees with a tape or you can use a timing light with a advance readout on it, the way that works is you turn the wheel to show 0 on the timing marks and it will show you how many degrees advance you have.

Lots of parts are now sealed with anerobic sealers since the surfaces are machined to close tolerances. Ford used a single gasket on the intake side of these manifolds and a large metal washer that was slightly concave to fasten the manifolds to the head.

If this was a sound good running engine before the changes I would look at the carb. Check the float level for correct setting and the choke to make sure it is not staying closed, It could have washed the cylinders down because of flooding. And by total I mean that includes the intial advanced also.
