I have run into cases with Duraspark that if the orange and purple wires are crossed in harness it will cause the timing to be off and and cause a backfire on acceleration.

A vehicle will pull to the side with the least amount of castor. I would think that you would want to have about a 1/4 degree difference.
Ford specs are +3 1/4 minimum to 4 3/4 maximum with a spread of no more than 1 degree at proper ride height.

Check and make sure your ECT sensor is working correctly. If the ECT sends a signal to the PCM that is reading cold it will cause to idle fast even if the engine is warm. Also check IAT sensor. I have seen that a couple of times during my career. The first time it was driven into the shop by a porter that said it would not idle. The second time that one caught fire because the mechanic pulled the coil wire.

If you cut the 4 hole divider out I think you will find that the runners have 2 levels. I think if you polish and blend the 2 levels in the plenum it will work fine, especially with a open adapter on top. It wont be a C but it should be close.

If you are facing the front of the balancer with the keyway at the top the timing mark should be just to your right about an inch roughly. On older models it will be a notch and later models a thin line if I remember correctly.

We used to bore them to 4.125 for short track racing, but they wont last because cylinder walls are to thin. But man they would run , we won many a race with them.

Have your checked the fuel pressure regulator to see if it is leaking? If it is it will drown the plugs with fuel.

hook your voltmeter to the purple and orange leads out of the distributor and crank over, it should generate aprox .5 volt. If it does then distributor is working. In that case if wiring between dist and module is good I would substitute a known good module.

Yes they made both after 1970. Pump mount bell housings have 8 bolts and case mount has 5 bolts, I personally have had no problems with either. However beware that you don’t get a C5, they had a lockup converter that gave lots of problems. The converter and bellhousing a roughly about an inch deeper.

Ideally you would want one post 1970. It has a larger pump shaft with more splines. Just make sure everything is for a 164 tooth flexplate. You can use pan fill or case fill.

Before you get into that lets take 2 jumpers from the positive on the battery 1 to the bat side of the coil and the other to the red wire on the module. Do you have the correct coil for electronic ignition? You can test the coil with an ohm meter.

Yes you have to cut into the harness from the ignition switch, find the run position wire and trace it back to where the resister wire is spliced. Cut it here and run a new wire to your resister block.

By doing that it will tell you if your ignition that you added is working. If it works then then you need to check wiring back to ignition switch. If you are showing infinite resistance on the resister wire it tells me that you have an open circuit back to the switch. With a voltmeter it should show...

For testing puposes you can jump from the positive battery post to the coil and module. Just make sure you disconnect after testing.

Generally with Ford part numbers, they start out with last letter A then later versions with fixes or improvements move to the next letter like B, C etc.

Put a jumper around the bypass resistor to test - make sure you are getting 12 volts to the coil when starting and also the module power circuit.

I am going by memory, in the 2 wire plug on the module the red wire is the power or switch, the white wire goes to the solenoid for 12 volts while starting. The 4 wire plug has black wire which is ground and goes back to dist, orange and purple to dist and green with maybe a stripe that goes to dist...

Is the cat converter still on - if the carb was flooding it could have melted the catalyst stopping the exhaust mostly up. It is simple to drop the exhaust pipe loose from the exhaust manifold to test drive - if it runs good then you know where to go.

The only caveat to sleeving the block is that you can only do every other cylinder or you will loose deck rigidity.

You might want to check the accel pump cam position and linkage. The cam has a 1 and 2 position. Also you can get different cams with different profiles.

In my years of experience if a cam bore is out of position, the cam will break after a couple of thousand miles.
I experienced this several times when I worked for a Ford dealer.

Pull all 6 plugs when warmed up and pump up cooling system, let it sit about 20 minutes, then spin it over and watch the plug openings for coolant coming out. That will tell you if a cylinder is losing coolant.

Put a second pin inside the first pin. It has worked well for me. The second pin is a smaller diameter and just keeps the first pin tighter in the hole.

You need a positive stop. A dial indicator and a piston that rocks a little in the bore will change the degree readings on the wheel.

Clifford makes a dual carb manifold, but anything else would have to be fabricated. Some guys are using a EFI lower and fabbing a box from sheet aluminun to mount carbs.

Casting numbers are on the block above the starter, but that will only give you the decade when the block was cast. Ford used to put a metal tag on the bolt that held the distributor in place.

Best ang for the bucks, EFI exhaust manifolds, Offy C intake and Autolite or Motorcraft 2 bbl carb. Then depending on year model you can put the Chevy 250 rocker arms on.

Go back to what the FTF has said in the past - put that 1BBL on a 302 and see what you think - The 2BBL Autolite or Motorcraft even if it is on an adapter to a 1BBL manifold will be an improvement.

Go ahead and find you a good core. What you would most probably want is one from a 302 or 289. This should be a 108 identified by the number cast on the main body near the throttle lever. They are easy to rebuild, pretty much straight foward.
