I VW struggled with this same issue in their air-cooled engines, at one time the offered nine different combinations of gear sizes that allowed the builder to get a proper fit. I'm a third gen air cooled VW tech and I've never heard that before. I've heard that about main bearings but not timing ge...

Upon further thinking it would be pushing it up, not down. The cam turns CCW; the distributor is driven on the outboard side of it which would lift it up regardless of tooth angle.

I would think so long as you wrapped up the flanges really well it would ship fine. It's strange as it was definitely affixed to the shaft and it had very little endplay. The pickup seemed to be a bit high so I used the shaft to tap it down by hand and then noticed the end play. No, this thing is made of pot metal and is about 1 1/4" long. Think of it as a spacer b/w the very top of the shaft just under where the hall plate screws are and it extends down to the bushing you mentioned. It was stuck to the shaft but now will spin freely around the shaft very smoothly. It ...

What about that collar, is that supposed to turn freely? I don't know if it was stuck or I knocked it loose if it was supposed to be attached to the shaft. Note I'm not talking about the shim at the bottom, rather the metal piece under the hall plate b/w it and the PIP where the shaft goes through it.

I've got .035 but seemed like I had less before I changed the PIP, is that too much?. The sleeve under the hall plate was "stuck" to the shaft before PIP change but now it turns freely. This sleeve is what limits end play on the inside of the distributor. Should it spin freely on the shaft...
