Re: Key Switch Issues

I had a similar problem on my 85, in addition to removing the key/lock assembly I also dropped the steering column and lubricated the switch that is operated by a push rod from the key/lock. After a good clean up of both parts and some lube it worked as new with no new parts needed.

when I had that TOD four speed in my 83 I had a similar problem, hard to get into gear, grinding, hard shifts. the tod is a slip yoke i believe, and the zf is fixed. you will likely need to have a slip spline in the drive shaft. The hydraulic is internal in the zf, rather than external in the tod and I think the holes on the fire wall may need to be re-drilled to clock/index the master to sit vertically. You...

While you have the driveline out be sure to look at the 3 rubber plugs for the shift rails in the tranny top cover. They like to leak. I put freeze plugs in mine when I re built it. The m5od has a bad rap but many failures could be attributed to low/no atf in tranny from this known point of leakage.

1.5" diameter change will result in around 2.5" increase in circumference. with that the 3.55 gears would work but the truck would downshift on slight grades (texas is pretty flat?) . A change to 3.73 gears would not be too dramatic with the increase in tire size.
