Battery cable questions

Hope these questions aren’t too basic but have a couple about the battery cables for a 1963 Falcon with a 170. Have been working on a rebuild for quite a while and am the point of finishing and I go to put the battery cables in and have a question about where the negative attaches, took pics when to...

Re: A few new questions about 63 Falcon vert engine rebuild

Good to know. I thought I was just inept and forgot how to clean grease and oil off stuff. The damage to the #6 cylinder end looks like it will take a little file work before the emery paper so I think I am leaning toward a new shaft. The shop fee will be about $50 and with gas and time, about 30 mi...

Re: A few new questions about 63 Falcon vert engine rebuild

Thanks Chad. Is I here a video on disassembly out there? Appears to be fairly straight forward but I am sure I am missing something. Looks like remove the pin, pull the clip and slide off rockers and towers. What kind of tolerances are we looking at on the shaft? As I think was mentioned in a previo...

A few new questions about 63 Falcon vert engine rebuild

Haven't posted for a while but I am making progress on my 63 falcon convertable. Head is done, carb rebuilt and getting ready to install on the block but have a couple of questions. First, the performance handbook says to chase the head bolt holes with a 7/16 course bottoming tap. I have a 7/16 X 14...

Re: So, I bought an engine

Trading was what I was kind of leaning toward. I don’t need the 3 speed manual transmission, think it would be a bigger hassle to convert the 63 over. Not sure what I may need in the way of parts for the current engine. Need to check and see If the new one has adjustable rockers, I understand some d...

So, I bought an engine

So, saw a engine listed on a sale site at a good price and bought it without asking any questions. Figured what the heck, working on a 63 Falcon with a 170 so what do I have to loose. Now that I have it home and had a chance to look at it I am wondering what to do. It is out of a 1965 Mustang with a...

Re: Next project, breaks

Thank you all for the information. Yes, I have pulled the drums and it has 2.25 all around. Will a dual chamber fit without modification to the shock tower? Space seems kind of tight?

Thanks again

Next project, breaks

While I am waiting for the head for my 63 falcon to come back I am planning my next project, breaks. Planning to keep the original 9 X 2.25 all around ( I know, upgrade to disk but my son is a stickler for originality). I have found all the parts but am a little confused as to which size wheel cylen...

Re: Head milling question

Thank you all for your help. One last question about the Viton valve seals. I remember reading a thread in the forum where it was suggested to use them only on the intake. Is this the current wisdom with a street engine or should I use them on the exhaust as well?

Thanks again.

Re: Head milling question

Manifold does look good, will only have the exhaust faced on the head. Just waiting for gasket set, thermostat, temp sending unit, head bolts and manifold bolts. Should I get washers foe the head bolts to make sure they don't bottom out?

Head milling question

Got the head off my 170 at the shop and they have gotten around to checking it out an it is good. Told them I want a 3 angle grind on and new valves valve seals. When we got talking about milling the head I began to question my calculations. Original head gasket has a crush of about .022 and from wh...

Re: Just finished taking head off 170 and, surprise extra parts

From looking at the lifters from the top I can see all of the retaining clips which is why i am puzzled. The cup on each lifter also appears to be intact. The piece that looks like a valve seal is metal, not rubber. It was found with the other pieces in the larger lifter galley toward the front of t...

Re: Just finished taking head off 170 and, surprise extra parts

Thanks, that is what I thought. From visually inspecting the lifters while in place they seem intact with retaining springs. What is the best way to remove them for inspection? How about cleaning them before reinstalls? Also the pushrod for the Lat valve before the firewall is a larger diameter than...

Just finished taking head off 170 and, surprise extra parts

Just took the head off the 170 in my 1963 Falcon which went near textbook. While my son and I were admiring our work I noticed something odd in the cavity between cylendars 2 and 3 (counting from the front), 3 small pieces (see pictures). What do they go to? Engine appears to have hydrolic lifters w...

Bolt, Stud, Gasket Recomendations

Getting ready to have the head on my 170 rebuilt and want to make sure I have all the parts to reassemble when it is done. I have been reading and it seems that studs for the head and exhaust are perfered over bolts for more even and consistent torq. Am I correct on this? I have found the stud sets ...

Re: Suggested improvements to 170 Cylinder Head

Got the book in order. Will check with Vintage Inlines for gaskets, thank you. I have seen in a number of posts where people take .060 of the head to acomodiate the difference between to original gasket and the new gasket crush. I am assuming this amount would also slightly increase to compression r...

Yes, actually. Factory option ones were installed in front. The drivers side one is all dented up from the pins in the bottom of the bucket seat backs. Don’t know if anyone is making reproductions. Rear ones are installed must not sure if factory.

I would like to switch to a C4 but I have discovered my son is a purist and wants it all original. We'll see how he feels once we det it on the road. If the tray needs a rebuild I think I will just buy a C4.
