Re: Valve cover off, now what?

Looks like it has been rebuild and the red looks like paint to me. If you scrape the gunk, pieces may clog up the oil pickup, maybe rub it away with a rag with solvent on it. This is welcome news. The PO had no idea of the mileage or state of the engine other than "it runs ok". Speedo say...

Valve cover off, now what?

Hi all, I popped the hood today because my breather cap grommet finally arrived and to put in a baffled pcv grommet. I noticed yesterday it started stumbling off the line. Today, when I pop the hood, lo and behold the breather cap and gromit are gone. No wonder I was having stumbling issues. So, afr...

I have the timing light with tach, so I can do that no problem.

I also have an broadband O2 sensor installed to tune with an AFR gauge. I also bought a vacuum gauge and a tach. It's a 3 gauge cluster i have to install as a radio delete.

I do not know the state of the timing chain.

I pulled the plugs and did a hot compression test last weekend. Plugs looked great (600ish miles on them), albeit a little on the white side. Dry PSI was: 150 - 155 - 150 - 155 - 140 - 140. This is true, but not totally correct. From what I've read/understand, the inversion of the polarity adds advance since the trigger will be on the wrong side of the magnetic pickup. So when the vacuum advance gets hooked up the advance becomes excessive quickly, hence the engine trying to shake it's...

I hear ya. That said, I'm hoping that the engine is fine, as I get no smoke if the PCV is not hooked up. I would expect that if I had rings or valve issues, I'd see smoke with and without the PCV hooked up. I don't. With the stock carb setup it ran clean as a whistle.
