Re: Extrude Hone for 300/4.9L engines

You can have a cam made with less lobe lift and long duration but it is better to have higher lift cam lobes with lower rocker ratios than low lobe lift and high rocker ratios. Can you explain why that is? It's always seemed to me that it would be the opposite, to a certain point, as it should keep...

MagaSquirt interests me for a number of reasons. Tunable with a lap top, uses a MAP system, and other reasons. I'm very likely to add this to my engine. It's a great system.

Re: Making a 240 equal to a 300

You're down 60 cubic inches, or almost a liter, of displacement. Making up the difference via hot rod parts is doable, but very expensive. I'd say you'd be better off buying a complete 4.9L engine and working it up and then installing it into your vehicle. The cost might not so much lower, but the o...

Polishing the intake manifold

While I don't plan to actually polish the intake manifold for the EFI 4.9L, I'd like to shave off the casting spigots, then Scotch Bright pad the rest for a low sheen or flat finish.

Anyone know if those spigots can be ground off without cutting holes in the runners.

Re: Extrude Hone for 300/4.9L engines

Great posts and info, Pmuller9 and others. That's the kind of info I can use in the future. Seems to me that someone was making a roller tipped rocker arm for the pedestal mounts, Comp Cams maybe? I forget. That eliminated the need for machining the heads, and guide plates. I think the lift had to b...

Re: Extrude Hone for 300/4.9L engines

300 hp naturally aspirated is attainable and is very streetable with reasonable gas mileage. It requires larger valves and port work. I have no problem with that power level. I usually try to stay conservative with what I do. I'll be looking at what valves are available to replace stock. Some time ...

Re: Why do carbs seem to do better than EFI for MPGS on 300s?

Still, I'm comparing carbed 4.9l to EFI 4.9l. I'd love to see those two engines on a rolling dynomometer. Totally stock comparison or does a person get to do some tuning. The carburetor 300 had different compression ratios from very low to low where the EFI 4.9 were mostly 8.8:1 Yes, I've read abou...

Re: Extrude Hone for 300/4.9L engines

What are your build intentions? I have a project in mind that I don't want to reveal, yet. Let's just say I like the 300/4.9l engine, have for years. I should be buying a truck equipped with a 4.9l EFI engine in a couple of days. This vehicle won't be my daily driver, I have other vehicles for that...

Re: Why do carbs seem to do better than EFI for MPGS on 300s?

Wrong, even a 1bbl modified 67 200 can make over 105 rwhp, and Ak Miller used this kind of process to get 35.6 US Mpg out of a 1-bbl 1967 200 Mustang in the MobilGas Total Economy run. The accounts of others here are true. Both 1bbls and EFi get great mileage. Lasitters F150 gets 35 mpg. The LazyJW...

Re: Why do carbs seem to do better than EFI for MPGS on 300s?

Welcome Pathines! Notible examples of great carb engines verses Bosch injection are the triple Weber Maserati Meraks, 8bbl Aston Martins, triple Weber DB6 and DBS Vantages in the 68 to 72 era where EFi or MFi got withdrawn due to service requirements. Now, now, you've thrown in extremely expensive ...

Re: Why do carbs seem to do better than EFI for MPGS on 300s?

My modern EFI sixes got worked. Hard. 80 MPH up and down hills, WOT pulling a trailer, etc...conditions that would have made the carbed '81 puke it's coolant all over the road. EFI Ford cars used to go into an open loop strategy on the highway running leaner than stoichiometric. Not sure if that fe...

You're right, I should have specified, Extrude Hone is what I have in mind for the EFI manifold.

Extrude Hone for 300/4.9L engines

I really like this method of opening up the intake manifold on this engine. It works on the whole length of the manifold and improves it all. It's no cheap, at $755.00 (as of 8/20/2019), it's still cost effective compared to someone trying to use a hand grinder to do the same. Extrude hone has been ...

Re: Why do carbs seem to do better than EFI for MPGS on 300s?

I can't think of a single instance where carbs are more efficient than or produce more power than fuel injection. I've had many carb equipped vehicles now have a number of FI vehicles. In my opinion, FI is much more efficient than carbs and easier to adjust as well. You just have to know what you're...
