I'll second the above comments. I've been using a DS1 distributor triggering a GM HEI module for years now, with zero issues.

As important as the type of distributor is getting the ignition timing curve set up properly - that's huge.

Not on a FordSix, but we just got a Holley Sniper going on a Ch*vy 350. Thoughts: * The truck runs as well or better than it ever did with a Q-jet, and we're nowhere near done getting it dialed in. * EFI is not a solution for a poorly-running engine - EFI will highlight and exaggerate any weaknesses...

I also have a '62 Ranchero with a worn gearbox, and have been watching for some place that rebuilds them.

As far as I know, nobody does the early "no rag joint" boxes.

If you find somebody to rebuild a stock box, let me know.

If you want to keep the throttle on the passenger side, you'll want the mirror-image version called Weber DFV, DFAV, or Holley-Weber 5200. I got mine from Tom Langdon for a great deal, but found out that mine happened to have an ENORMOUS idle air bleed, which made it lean as heck and isn't available...

Yup - sadly, "Remanufactured" doesn't mean much anymore, be it starters, alternators, or especially carburetors (NEVER buy a parts store reman carb!!!)

Heck, I've seen brand new parts for newer cars that don't meet OEM specs, even AC Delco and Autolite.

I've found that Autozone starters (and alternators) are a crapshoot. The lifetime-warranty ones are slightly better than the 1-year ones, but still.

I've used the "Right Stuff" pookie all by itself with no leaks. Wipe the sealing surfaces with carb cleaner or some such, and if done well you'll have a tough time getting the valve cover off, it's that tenacious.

Don't keep tightening, that's what causes leaks. Best bet is to take the cover off, make sure the gasket surface is FLAT - feel free to hammer it back flat if need be. I don't know if a modern-type gasket is available, I rather doubt it. But I've had really good service using "The Right Stuff&q...

Regarding vacuum source, know that the ONLY difference between Manifold and Ported is at idle, where Ported has no vacuum so no advance. The only reason Ported vacuum was ever introduced was to raise combustion temps at idle and reduce emissions. Once the throttle is cracked open, they both function...

Also, if / when you pull the transmission, be sure to replace the pilot bearing in the back of the crankshaft. If you can, an actual bearing is much better than a bushing.

If it is loose at all, you're liable to end up with a chattering clutch engagement no matter what transmission you put in.

It's probably one of the simplest transmissions ever made, shouldn't be hard at all to rebuild.

Although, if you could manage it, a swap to the later 3.03 transmission is a HUGE improvement.

I'd think that a better approach would be to try reverse-flow cooling, push the coolant into the head, then out the front of the block. You'd have a cooler head, and then the hottest part of the block would be the front cylinders, where there's more airflow.

There is no fusible link to the coil, some vehicles used a resistor wire, which was often just a long piece of tiny wire (in my '71 Buick it was a 15-foot long piece of like 28-gauge) .

If you don't have mechanical points, 99% of the electronic ignitions use full 12V.

To clarify, I agree that you need a high Zddp or moly oil, especially during cam break in.

Interesting question...given that modern oils are light-years better than anything available 40 years ago, and with modern materials and QC on parts like bearings, camshafts, etc, and that moly rings seat themselves pretty much instantly... Apart from running at high rpm to keep the cam and lifters ...

If you want to 'bolt and play', you'd have better results with a Holley. The QJ is NOT that carb. Maybe you'll get lucky; maybe not. But to tune a QJ to your engine you need a Air/fuel/ratio gauge hooked up, and a vacuum gauge, and to go through certain procedures. If you don't, you really have no ...
