Consider the possibility there is an airlock in your cooling system.
This can create your symptoms
Go back to 195 t stat but use the motorcraft and install the jiggle valve at the 12 o clock position

I did have some trouble locating torque spec for the 351 marine app. Seems most boat owners or shoppers are mesmerized by HP numbers thus tq numbers fade from view. The 351 was a 240- 310 hp engine and forums report a run rpm of 4800. I'm going to guess that v8 delivers 265 - 300 tq... Thus assuming...

If the 300 were put to use in this application I would start with carburetor , a quadrajet for sure, and some fancy ignition/ timing. Nope your not overthinking or typing

The unequal thicknesses of mounting tabs has always bugged me. I have and do use the single piece gasket, but would love to hear other opinions about this .

Facet - top o the line stuff, we use them in const as lift pumps they last forever and can pull 10 feet easily diesel or gas, and in one case, water.

I buy the type with the spin on strainer.

Ford's love a good earthing connection- the more the better.
May I suggest you either connect your battery to that new frame ground or replace the battery strap to the engine with a new high quality strap?
Have it made up at a welding shop.
Commercial straps are a questionable commodity these days

I trust the facet- Purolator pumps . They have exactly what you need. In terms of pressure and volume. And they are a lift pump as well as a pusher. Great pumps Return lines. So in a marine application short of full on racing, the incoming coolant temp should be as close to operating temp as possible? Like 195 or so? not all were reverse rotation, just one side of a pair in the two engine versions. Singles engines were standard rotation. That is what I expected to discover when looking into it. So thx , saved me the effort. To my recollection the Ford was not a popular twin screw power, not like the GM engines....

A problem of air in the system sometimes means the coolant level does not consistently reach the sensor resulting in readings that are inaccurate.

I reccomend motorcraft only for t stat. Mount it in such a way that the jiggle valve is at 12 o' clock.

Another effective means is an electric radiator fan with shut off delay.

but reading his post it seems to say hot starts are not a problem it's when engine is cooling down or did I wrongly read into his post that idea

How many times I have frustrated myself by cross wiring my plug wires, putting the order on the cap wrong....
I've only put the dist 180* out , oh say , 100 times.
You likely have one of these common problems
I agree the icm is likely not the culprit , they just quit. Dead . Stop. Nothing.

Starts cold Starts well immediately after warm shut off Hard start during cool down. Something.... Gas odors? During these phases? Fuel pump leak down, Fittings not tight, too tight, Teflon tape blocking passage Never trust rebuilders to set your float. It's a mind numbing exercise but simple to do....

Much to learn here. The critical part is crimping rightly. The tools and terminal suppliers re all over the map in terms of what might work well with another. Currently the knipex crimper looks like fun but not at 250.00. Soldering is mostly out of the question for me anyway, except I like my solder...

Yes the EFI fan clutch is threaded onto the pump spigot. It's a RH thread so the pump/fan has to spin counterclockwise or the fan would come loose and fall off. Turbo plain bearings need a decent flow of oil. Normal pressure line uses a 1.5mm restrictor, and large drain. My manifold came from a rear mount setup, and he'd used the mechanical fuel pump as an oil return/suction. Thermosiphon may be adequate for the water portion, but not oil. I'd suspect that...
