Good morning,

When replacing the head pipe, beginning at the 4.9L stock log exhaust manifold, can a larger diameter pipe be used? Can the end of the larger pipe be flared such that it will mate with the exhaust manifold ball shaped exit?

Some intake manifolds have a hole adjacent to the carb mounting surface (about the size of a penny) that is for the EGR. The carb spacer under the carb has a similar passageway. Jason832, check with Bill [wsa111]. He sold me a NOS Motorcraft Duraspark distributor which he recurved for my application [formerly a feedback 1986 with EGR removed]. I currently use a MSD 6AL ignition module. The truck runs great and returns good gas mileage.

Reading Ford supplied information on another forum, I saw that in 1982 a different camshaft [reduced overlap] was specified for all 300 [4.9L] engine manual / transmission trucks with 2.47 or 2.75 gear ratios for 49 state models.

I, too, am using MSD 6AL ignition box and have for many years. It works quite well, but it is hard on the distributor cap and rotor. Mine seem to need replacement @ about 25-30K miles. The Frenchtown Flyer once suggested coating the contact areas with a light coating of dielectric grease. I did this...
