Proper fluid level and a new vacuum modulator did not change the behavior.
I'm going to try adjusting the bands and see what I can get from that.

I'm also going to have to dig out my C4/C6 rebuild book, I bought one years ago.
O'Reily's has a master rebuild kit for $85 if i need to go that far.

I'm pretty certain that you have to pull the head also, regardless of engine in or out of vehicle. Otherwise the lifters will keep falling down.

But yes, it should be doable in the vehicle.

I thought that the Distributor Less 2.3's still used a stub to drive the oil pump and provide a tach signal?

This is the motor in the 2wd ranger at Dads.

If that adapter plate for the original road draft tube isn't baffled, my guess is that you could be sucking through a LOT of oil. Not required in NoDak, but if you are required to have it, you may want to look into getting an updated valve cover with a factory provided PCV valve grommet and a factor...

You cannot use the 200 flex plate. On the 200 the flex plate is something like a 4 pointed star and it bolts to the torque converter. And the torque converter had the starter ring gear welded to it. I'd run a starter that matches the flexplate. My reasoning is that the nose cone depth is set when the starter bolts to the bellhousing and the nose cone determines the open angle on it, and the depth at which the drive engages.
