Re: Offenhauser 3x1 Build Thread

Thanks Leo, so I assume you must remove the pan to do this since you also use the nyloc nuts?

There's so much crud around mine I cant even tell how its attached to the pan (4 screws? rivets?) :(

Re: Offenhauser 3x1 Build Thread

As I recall they are basically the same gasket, but the special had a (gray?) coating over the funky silver. It was probably the one that wasn't packaged, just thrown in the box by Matt.

The dipstick I was referring to was the engine dipstick that goes into the side of the pan, leaks like heck!

Re: New headers, lower top end

fuel system was completely replaced by previous owner, but i suppose some fuel system additive wouldn't hurt. Back when I adjusted all the valves and set the timing, I did not set it by the book necessarily but set it to where it ran the smoothest. Is this wrong? Should I set timing by the book then...

Re: Offenhauser 3x1 Build Thread

Well the guy (Mike I believe) from Classic Inlines had stated that the special gasket worked better for him, so I'd go with that. I believe that I'll just keep blowing them out until I get the 'wedge' installed. Never checked the clearance, would probably be wise to do so, but if I had and foresaw a...

Re: Offenhauser 3x1 Build Thread

Hey Chad no off-road, maybe if I hooked up with some locals I would, but by July I'll have the type of money in this thing that it will not only be strictly street, but seasonal as well! (These dumbasses like salt around here) Anyway made a little progress today, got one of the carbs cleaned up (bow...

Re: New headers, lower top end

I thought so too but no evidence whatsoever of a valve cover leak. Plugs have well under 500 miles on them. Engine is likely stock 66 but hasn't been driven more than 1,000 miles in 20 yrs, odo reads 96k but who knows, all I know is compression is about 120 across all cylinders. What do you mean by ...

Re: New headers, lower top end

Here are pics of each plug, not purty...thoughts? What causes the oil on (some of) the threads? bad oil ring? that wouldn't make sense because the oil seems to be more on the outer threads vs the combustion chamber end. Pics are in reverse order, starting with #6 thanks PS for the record I increased...

Re: Offenhauser 3x1 Build Thread

Disassembled the first Holley 1940, gaskets are pretty stuck on, turned the bowl upside down and dumped this out in my hand...how long does it take gas to turn to complete DUST?? Also has a smell I can't quite identify, but I know I've smelled it before. Im thinking it must be at least 10 years beyo...

Re: New headers, lower top end

I have a DS ignition system out of a combination of 78-79 Fairmonts, 1100 currently on engine is SCV so vacuum lines are all plugged...carbs I'm rebuilding are non-SCV sooo

One guy on the bronco site suggested using vacuum to open the secondary carbs?? Anyone done that?

Re: Offenhauser 3x1 Build Thread

Thanks fellas, I should have the carb rebuild kits from Mike's by tomorrow. Meanwhile, my 'wedge' I calls it, arrived today. If nothing else, I hope it resolves my exhaust gasket issues. They seem to blow out at 3-4 ports regardless if manifold or headers are installed. I'll also obtain a higher qua...

If the OP sold the halfcab I'm guessing he no longer frequents this site?

Re: New headers, lower top end

Do you do much off roading and if so what kind of terrain? If you frequently drive on very steep dirt roads with loose rocks the transition from 1 carb to 3 when pressing on the gas could cause some excitement when you don't want it. But it would be fun on pavement. Nope will be pretty much all pav...

Re: Offenhauser 3x1 Build Thread

Ordered 3 rebuild kits and 3 brass floats for the Holley 1940 carbs. I know they're not your favorite David but makes the most sense for my situation. I will watch Mikes Carburetor videos before rebuilding. I've successfully rebuilt a handful of carbs over the years; I can only think of one that did...

Re: New headers, lower top end

Thanks to each and all...it is in fact the '66 170 that is most likely original to the vehicle. All I know about the engine for sure is that all cylinders measure 115-120 psi, I think they measure 150+ original/after rebuild?? but I'm thinking 120 is respectable enough to keep running it. Anyway yes...

New headers, lower top end

Installed CI headers and thrush turbo mufflers, ran dual exhaust out in front of rear tires, sounds great!! But took it on 2 mile stretch of highway and ALL she had was 65mph on level ground!! Stock manifold and single exhaust I could hit 75 if I wanted to, always held her below 70 for safety reason...

Re: Offenhauser 3x1 Build Thread

Here is the crack between 3-4 exhaust on the 200 head...can this be fixed? Would welding in the Clifford wedge fix (part of) the crack at the same time? Of course this same machine shop said "we don't fix cracks" :!:

powerband I'm not sure about the port size on the intake, but now that you mention it the center port did appear larger to me over the weekend...I guess I should've measured that too. Will do tonight.

Wow! Thanks for all the input, a lot to digest. First and foremost I probably should've mentioned this is going in a 66 Bronco, not a car. Hey thanks everyone, both heads I have are '66, so the intake will work with either one. Think i'll take your advice (x4!!) and call around to other machine shops. Offenhauser 3x1 Build Thread

Acquired an Offy 5205 Intake with linkage and 3 Motorcraft carbs. I took a 200 cylinder head to my machine shop for a rebuild and they basically said they would not mill the intake log to accomodate the Offy because it "wasn't their cup of tea" So my plan is to modify my existing 170 head ...

Re: 68 170 Head rebuild

Thanks guys never heard of someone cutting the hood for an offy on a Ford 6, but I know the 250 and pretty sure the 240/300 are all taller engines than the 170/200 so I'm guessing that Bronco was upgraded to one of those. I'll start a new thread when I get my head done.

So you did finally verify none of the Broncos/Trucks had hydraulic lifters? If so, good to know. Howdy ledslinger, just read your story clear back to Sep, hows it coming along? I'm looking for a late 70s 200 head for the larger intake valves and the hardened seats, then plan to have it milled for both the chamber and a 2bbl carb. What cam did you go with? Performance Handbook Question

Hello All,
On page 7 of the handbook there is a Stock Cylinder Head Specifications table but it skips 1975 and 76...anyone know why? Someone said they didn't make the six those years but on page 2 there is a pic of a 1975 250 casting number.

Thanks,
Jeff
