I would drill out the rivets while you have easy access. You could make a gasket with a piece of gasket material available at your auto parts store rather than use RTV

taller tires, if you have the gear and power to spin them, would help keep more of the body out of the water, thus cutting down the resistance to forward movement when the truck hits the water. While you have the driveline out be sure to look at the 3 rubber plugs for the shift rails in the tranny top cover. They like to leak. I put freeze plugs in mine when I re built it. The m5od has a bad rap but many failures could be attributed to low/no atf in tranny from this known point of leakage.

1.5" diameter change will result in around 2.5" increase in circumference. with that the 3.55 gears would work but the truck would downshift on slight grades (texas is pretty flat?) . A change to 3.73 gears would not be too dramatic with the increase in tire size.

If the point adjustment made a big difference in how it ran (as suggested by a previous post) then you are barking up the right tree I think. Have you considered an electronic ignition conversion (pertronix or something similar) to eliminate the points?

If you go limited slip there is still slip, just limited by clutches that eventually wear out. 31s will fit fine and work well with the od trans and 3.08 gear ratio. Depending on the width and offset of rims you use you may find they will rub the radius arms in the front when turned to the stops but one quickly learns not to turn as sharp

another consideration with regards to swapping the axle is that the larger ring gear diameter as essentially a step back in the ground clearance department. remember the big tires will be hard on bearings as well as reduce the effectiveness of the brakes and put extra strain on steering. the cast aluminum bracket is pretty rigid. Could you make a shim to fill the space where the threaded boss in the head is missing and then make a brace from the back of the supercharger that ties into the threaded hole that the coil would normally be bolted past the next spark plug?

I wasn't really suggesting a tranny upgrade, rather that your ideal rear axle ratio is a consideration of the ratios of your tranny's gears, tire size, and engine rpm. depends on your tranny. I have a 2 wd truck also, it is manual 4 spd od with 3.55 ratio and it has stock 235/75 on it. I like that set up. It will pull a small trailer and it gets reasonable milage (or here in canuk land would that be kilometerage?)

i have 3.55 axle gears in mine with 35" tire and it could use deeper gears. 3.08 with 35" tires will get old fast if you plan on much off road use.

the power steering pump on the carb engine is mounted low down rather than above the ac compresser on the serpentine setup. Maybe you could swap a steering pump with a serpentine pulley into the bracket from the carb engine that puts it lower down? (this would work if you don't have ac)

now that you need to change your distributor you might consider a vacuum advance set up from an earlier truck to by pass the feedback carb setup? In my truck it got rid of a lot of wiring gremlins and made it so I could finally set timing properly.

The air pump is controlled by vacum as far as I can see so the ecm wouldn't know if it is on or not. I never thought of the effect it would have on the o2 sensor reading but that makes sense.
