I have 1960 Comet with a 1968 200ci L6. It has the newer non-spark control distributor. I rebuilt the original 1100 last year and she ran a lot better. The problem is the choke housing is badly warped and cracked and the linkage is disconnected and possibly missing.

I figured it'd be easier to pick up a re manufactured carb from Rock Auto. They have a few listed for 68 L6 motors.
The Carter YF, Motorcraft 1101a, and a Holley. I was going to just pickup the 1101a figuring it'd be an easy no brainier bolt it on, but with core fees included I can get the Carter YF for $100 cheaper.

I seam to remember there being something different about the throttle linkage for the Carter though. I have the old 1960 linkage hooked up now. Does any one know off hand if the Carter's linkage will hook up easily? I'm not afraid of some fab work if need be but I'd like to know ahead of time what I'm getting into.

Any opinions positive or negative on the Carter over the 1101a?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Well, there are 2 versions of the Carter...the YF and the RF. If I recall correctly, the RF is the one you really want and the YF is junk...but I may have that backwards and if so, I'm sure someone will correct me.

IMO, the 1100 series is a great carb. Solid and reliable even if it has a few downsides. There are some websites around on how to modify the 1100 to fix some of the short comings.

Or, do like I did and just run the 1100 without the choke...it worked pretty good even in New England. I just ran a little richer on the idle set during the winter months.

First off, I wouldn't buy a carb from any parts house (Even rockauto) as anything other than a core...

However, the YF is certainly not junk. I am running one now and it performs very well. I also have run a 1100 which performed fine, as well.

You should just buy jaymers old 1100 (from pony). It would probably work very well for you and be a lot less expensive than a peice of crap parts store rebuild.

Most rebuilt carbs will be jetted rich. I wouldn't give them the old core.

I would keep it and rebuild it.

Howdy Bzck:

The 1101 will be rated at 210 cfm while the YF is rated at 187. So you'll have a little more performance potential out of the 1101. If the 1101 is the type with no Spark Control Valve it will likely come closer to your original linkage. The YF will require some linkage adaptation to leave it mechanical. Most of us upgrade to a cable setup as the YF pulls over the valve cover.

It is likely that both will have a wider bolt pattern then your '68. Either can have the mounting holes slotted and the intake throat tapered to clear the butterfly.

"Rebuilts" have a bad reputation around here as many are dirty inside, have mismatched parts, bad gaskets and sloppy assembly. If you go this route I'd encourage you to look inside to verify that all is well before you install. Take a look at the main jet size, recheck the float level and needle valve alignment with the inlet.

Good luck. Hope that's what you need.

Adios, David

I couldn't remember which is which. I think I have a YF sitting around somewhere...in my garage of car mysteries.

I've had decent luck with rebuilts from Napa. I had to buy them for my Offy set up.

I had good luck with the YF and Maverick cable throttle that the previous owner of my car installed.

All I really had to do was freshen the YF up with a parts store rebuild kit and then shorten the throttle cable a bit so it got full travel.

And if your car doesn't have DSII already, that is an awesome upgrade as well.

Where would you even buy a rebuilt parts house 1100? Autozone doesn't show then, neither does Advance Auto. I tried to get one at NAPA and they didn't have any either?

ebay. I picked one up on there for about 90 bucks. But it had a crappy idle circuit. Then I bought a 2nd carburetor from another forum member. It had too big a venturi for the 170. So I slapped the two together into 1 "Frankencarb"!
