I asked this before in a response post but thought it best to create a seperate post for individuals to respond.

What is a 223 inline 6 and what are the advantages / disadvantages to owning one?

I'm currently in the process of scouting out potential truck rides and have come across several with the 223. Most of the trucks I am looking at are early sixties, 62-64.

So, anyone?

the 215/223/262 series went from '53 till about '64.

all of em have pretty much the same block, and the heads are all interchangable.

the brass ring is a mid-years 223 block and head, with 262 internals. 223 stroker motor.

advantages?

hell man, its a vintage Ford six!

I dig 'em 'cause they're neat engines and oddballs in a sense. Not many people run them but they do have potential. It's just for the same amount of cash you can build a small block with more power.

One disadvantage is four main bearings. The engines are still tough as hell but not as tough as the seven mains in the later 6's.

215s started in '52.

That's why I like them as well. It's a pity that most of them get scrapped and replaced with V8s.

I had the hardest time trying to locate a 215 to make my '52 Panel stock. I finally found one, but it has minor issues with the block (see a separate post in this forum). I am still looking for another decent 215.

I owned a couple of 223s in 1960 full size cars in the early-mid 70s. They were good engines. They made adequate power, got decent fuel mileage and were very reliable. At the time, parts were very easy to find and reasonably priced. I wouldnt worry about 4 main bearings. Early Rolls Royce engines used 2 main bearings 1 on each end. The engines were so balanced and smooth that 2 were all that were necessary to keep the engine from coming apart. Those 223s were smoother running (less vibration) than my 76 300 with the 7 bearing set up.

Thanks for the responses! Got a few more questions:

Will any of the later year (170,200) six parts interchange with the 223? I'm looking at a '54 year block and head, currently.

How difficult would it be to convert to an electronic igintion system without spending big bucks?

What type of transmission typically came with a four door sedan for that year (obviously I've come across a good deal for a car)?

i doubt any small six parts would fit, maybe a carb or something simple

i think Petronix makes electronic ignitions for 'em

yea, none of the little six parts are interchangabe...

but yes, pertronix sells an ignitor pickup that works in the 223, i have one in mine

Its my understanding that you can use the duraspark II system on the 223/262s with a little modification. I think that you also need a 64+ oil pump as well (apparently these motors were made for a little while after '64 for industrial purposes?). Don't know much more than that.

F.F.

But unfortunately when a 262 I-6 Was located for you, you were not willing to Dole out the Rhino for it.

It would have been Nice if you would have Still sent me a responce to let me know One way or the Other in a Reasonable amount of time, so that I could have let the Owner of it know that you were Not Able to purchase it instead of Hanging him out to Dry when others expressed interest in it & could have sold it while waiting for your reply that Never came.
