250, T5 transmission swap flywheel question...

Hey all,

I'm getting ready to stick a T5 behind my 250. In getting together my parts I bought this flywheel off fleabay - it was zero balanced, a Ford product and nicely priced:

My question is - do you think I need to fill the extra holes with set screws (as the ad suggests) or can I leave them empty? I assume the extra threaded holes are there to bolt weights on if you need them, which I don't. I'm nervous about putting set screws in, as if one of them ever worked its way out it would throw off the balance, and I'd have a loose set screw in my bell housing.

Thoughts or experience?

They had to mention the setscrews...

I also don't figure the percentage of offbalance without setscrews, but to be confident in a complete performance build, a couple of grade 5 fasteners and some loctite should make you stop thinking about it...

BTW , an 80's/90's Mustang PMGR starter will slap right into that 250 with157T Manual FW . More room (for headers 8) ) and better starting.

I agree, no set screws. Many small block Ford flywheels are drilled for both 10" and 11" clutches, with one set of holes unused, and Ford never filled the empty threaded holes with anything.

Ah . but the clutch holes are symetrical and would be self-balancing. Do the balance weight holes open to the clutch face?.

I agree setscrews seem unneeded. For S&G, weigh two (5/16 X 3/4 ?) fasteners / weight of FW. This should help conversation. 8) .

Yeah...seems like putting in set screws would exactly duplicate the balance of the flywheel with no screws, just at a slightly heavier overall weight.

That's assuming the all of the set screws are the same weight.

Not even the same Q, but in the same general drive line area 8-}

Just got a 4.1 (D5DE - '75?) and put it on a stand...this is realy early in the project. Been degreased, 's about it. Wanna run it on the stand to listen/get compression ck - no bell or starter.
Like to put a 5.0 w/hydrolic clutch, high mount starter bell on it (understand any 250/300/302/351 bell 'll fit). It's got a auto fly wheel (I think, is a kinda thin 1 < 1/2").
1) What donner?

The 170/2.8 I'm removing has the carb/FW/3 speed/T-case to fit when I get that far.
2) Do I need the man FW offa my 170 to run it in the stand n w/the 5.0 bell I find? :?

Just call me nummie,
Sorry to jack the thread. Thank you for your time/attention -

If I understand your question,\:

The 2.8 FW won't fit the 250 engine. FW for 250 is similar too SBF but has to be NEUTRAL balance where most SBF are weighted FW's as previous thread describes. You could run it on the stand if you have a torque converter bolted on the auto-flexplate for balance/weight. Neutral balance SBF type FW's are available from E-Bay and other Ford performance parts vendors.

If I understand your question,\:
Wow, you're good (X2). Yes, many tell me 1) "it's hard to understand you, Chad"
and
2) it seems (I'm not a mechanic) you understand what I'm trying to do. Along the same lines (not a mechanic) you use the 'flexplate' wrd. Is that the name of a FW in auto equiped app?

Let me know if I'm steppin on the thread. I'll take this 'back channel'.

OK, great, thank you I woulda taken my work (an intermmitant & only income while unemployed) truck offa the road to get it's FW (170/rat 3 speed) onto the 4.1 & inside a newly as yet unaquired bell and still been in trouble. Now, I got a C4 (needs rebuilding) w/o a tq converter. May B I outta get the 'verter for that n just run it in the stand w/that. No bell @ all?

Another option, I guess, is buy a rarer 250-only neutral balanced manual FW readily available offa flee bay and still get the man.bell/man. starter (the latter @ AutoZoneAdvance etc). I'd like to try a man. bell housing that is hydraulic clutch compliant to put in a ZF (w/master & slave) later. That would B a 5.0/5.8 bell I assume (ZF came out AFTER' big six' & 289 "died" so no other bells for this app). This is really the direction I wanna go. (nice to have options w/something in my life). Anyone readin see any :bang: ahead with tryin this mod (besides me havin no $)? Could I find a HD clutch of some sort that fits a "mustang" motor n ZF (may B not needed)? Would the ZF be too much for the rebuilt/beefed up 4.1 to 'spin' along with the D20 T-case n 31 to 33X 9.5X15 inch tires?

OK, your a big help. Thanks.
