2V carbs and chronic hood clearance problems

One of the things I hear people writing about alot is Mustang hood clearance after swapping to a 2v on an adapter. I think it would be helpful to the rest of us who would like to be 2V powered someday to see what combos HAVE worked for those of you running 2V carbs. Be sure to mention your year.

I have a 66 Mustang with a Clifford adapter, and Weber 32/36 carb. The air cleaner is a small rectangle job that Weber sells. I think it is a 1 3/4" thick element and roughly 2" high air cleaner assembly. But I am going off of a 6 year memory on those measurements.

Information I have is that unless you use the stock 1.5" tall Australian air cleaner, a 250 2V won't fit under the hood of the 69 to 70 Mustangs.

The best option is cutting off the air horn, and using an Impco CA 300 Goose neck used for Liquid Propane Gas conversions. It allows you to remote mount the air cleaner above the spark plugs. It polishes up nice. Check out Does10s. His car has an after market 90 degree goose neck. It's not a problem to cut the choke horns off a carb if the climate is warm. There are plenty of hats to fit 2300 and 5200 Holleys.

The earlier 64.5/65/66/67/68's have a better amount of hood room. The rather ugly remote GTA390 air cleaner could be an other option. Early Toyota trucks use remote filters with goose necks, and the 2-bbl carb has a similar top to the Holley/Weber 32/36 and Holley/Weber 5200.

While I don't have the adaptor issue, this is the lowest profile filter I've seen. It's a $15 foam edelbrock filter you can get at just about any Pep Boys or Autozone. I'm not a huge fan of foam, but since I needed something I knew would work with minimal cost at the time, it was the ticket. I have to worry more about side clearance then hood clearance.

I just cut a hole in my hood and fiberglassed a hump on it with the piece I removed. I will try to post some pictures, but I used clifford's adapter, a 2150 2v carb, and a homemade air cleaner built to fit my application.

I have a 65 Mustang with the Holley 5200 and the Clifford Adapter. I got an air filter off a 80' Pinto and modified it to fit the carb. I just had to block off part of the filter housing. It is aluminum and cleaned up nicely.

I have a 65 Mustang, Oz head, Weber 38 DGAS carb with a custom made adapter to bolt it up. The back left corner of the air cleaner just barely makes contact with one of the hood support braces. I asked the body shop if they could either cut a notch or modify the brace with a hammer so the sir cleaner would clear. They didn't do either for me. Over time the air cleaner has pushed a small dent into the brace and the problem is solved.

When I get back from Iraq I am looking at using some of that hazardous fire pay and family separation pay to put a throttle body injection system on the car. I am curious to see if I will still have hood clearance problems.
Hope you find a solution to the hood clearance problem.

Would this be a solution to your problem?

plus some tubing and a remote free flowing filter

THat unit looks a little tall.

I am converting to a Holley 2300 (from a 69 Stang 302) with the Clifford adaptor (2 pcs; 1- 1V to 2V Webber, another Webber to Holley). THe height from the manifold mounting spot to my hood is 8 1/2" (maybe 8 9/16"). The clifford adaptors and the Holley carb rise to 5 7/8" from teh bottom of the adaptor to teh mounting flange for the air cleaner. THat means I need a total height of the air cleaner to be 2 1/2" or less.

Summit show a few drop base units that claim to be 2 1/2" from flange to top. THe problem is that the Holley carb, and all the hardware make some drop bases not owrk (they rest on teh carb body or interfere with the attachment hardware.

THis is a true trial and error setup.

BTW, the triangle foam Edlebrock unit was too tall, way too tall, for my 65 Mustang 'vert.

One of the problems running the 2 bbl. Holleys on the adapter seems to be with Clifford's "new" two-piece stacked design (1V to Holley 5200, Holley 5200 to Holley 2300). I don't know how long ago they went to that design, but somewhere in my garage I know I have one of their older and shorter one piece (1V to Holley 2300) adapters. If I can find that thing I'll post some pictures and dimensions so we can compare.

I just put a pinto air cleaner on my 5200, aint the coolest but it worked great

Anybody know about clearance with a Holley-Weber in a roundbody Falcon?

there is another way to clear out all the problems with hood clearance !! with using any type of filter you want !!

check my website / performance parts / motormounths !

I don't know about other carbs but the 2100 autolite with the double clifford adapter is almost the same hight as the stock 1bbl on a round body falcon. A bit pricey but darn trick and very low is the Holley "hi-teck" which will mount with room to spare on a round body and autolite- i would think that the Holley2300 would be the same.
this is a autolite with holley 'hi-tech'

there was no problems with this air cleaner clearance wise before i added the 2 webers and their plumbing

wow, danwagon, interesting. i used the edelbrock foam on my 2100, but i had the carb adapter built by the machine shop out of 1" aluminum plate, so there's plenty of clearance. i, too, was nervous about foam, but it's a lot thicker than the cheesy 'moon hubcap' jobs we had in the 70s.

A typical Holley or Autolight 2 bbl is like 2"-2&1/2" shorter than the early 1 bbls. I have used the foam type filter you have before and the only issue i have with them is that if you ever get it loaded up and it back fires the foam will catch fire, requireing a replacement element.
The 'Hi-Tech' unit is actually not a flat plane on the 2 cleaners boxes so there there is a front and back if you need a little more room. Mounted 1 way it just touches the hood , but turned around due to the slope of the hood you gain another 1/2-1" clearance.

Air cleaner clearance issues:

I used a mid '70's Mustang six (250) air cleaner for early Comet (Falcon) engine bay with a Langdon 2X1 and H/W5200. The 'stang air cleaner has a very low profile or "drop" as stock. I used the BFH to form it into a flat plane the size of the 5200 oval flange and cut to fit. I made a retainer stud basket and fill the 'stang plumbing holes to finish the install. Works great and retains that traditional road-rod look.:

His is talking about the 2v adaptor from Cliffy not the Aussie head.

Yes, there are some clearance issues but most that I have seen use those tiny rectangle filters.

I have a direct carb mount to the intake, but I use spacers so the linkage will not hit the intake log, so in reality my carb is about 1" above the intake log.

Here are some pictures of my installation. I have at least 1 3/4" clearance to the hood in my 67 mustang.

This air cleaner is available @ Big B Auto #2195box 1-866-392-2442.

It comes with a filter but the replacement # AC is A212CW it is a 14" X 3" filter, K & N is 1650.

Hope this gives you gents with a holley or 2100 autolite carb an air filter option.

This works on a 67 mustang, but the clearance on a 64-66 is probably less. William
