3.3 Alloyhead Crossflow into a Land Rover Series III ?

Ok this is a little long winded but here goes, I have acquired a Series III 6 cylinder long wheelbase Landrover without the Rover motor. Now most people put the red holden 6 (186 seems to be the favourite) up to and including the 202/3.3.
Now I have a Ford P/Van NSW spec 3.3 alloy head crossflow which I think would be better than the holden motor on a number of issues.

Mainly that the crowns of the pistons don't separate like the holden motors at high rpm's and of course the overall efficiency of the crossflow/weber carby set up as agains the near log manifolds of the holden 6.

Now I can get an adapter kit for the crossflow into a Landrover thats not the problem. What I'd like to know is is there anyone out there who has done the conversion and what problems did they encounter?

I could put the EFI 4.1 out of my retired ZL fairlane but Landrover gearboxes and axel shafts have a low threshold of pain so i'm told. Also the Rego mob would knock it back as an oversized engine according to the formula.The original Rover 6 is about 2.8.

I've got a complete holden 6 kit including motor, but I only want to have to do up 1 motor be it the 186 or the 3.3 crossflow.

What do you think?
 
Hi ferryman I'm Bill. I have had 2 landy's both with six's in them.The firsthad a L/R six in it which I removed and replaced with a 2.6 Rover 105 engine and also the high ratio sedan diffs front and rear ,that was a series 2.The second was a Series3 with a salisbury diff in the rear,in this one I ran a 186,it was magic.When I rebuilt the 186 prior to running it in the S3,I used ,now I think the name was harrington rings or a name that sounded like that,and these were recommended by the other guys in the 4x4 club with similiar set ups.Iran this landy for 5 years with only the usual bolts getting loose type problems,which are an everyday fact of life with a Landy.If you go over everything underneath after each excursion to the bush and tighten what needs tightening ,you can't go wrong.
I read you had a retired ZL do you want to swap any Zl bits for a Landy front end complete in good condition(as far as I can remember)with free wheel hubs included(still attached)?

:wink: Still getting it worked out. Hence I haven't heard from you about the bearings.
 
Addo"s right ,some of the guy's in the 4x4 club experienced problems with the Holden's bearings,but they were doing a lot of winching I was not and looked after my "truck" very well.There is a kit made specifically to fit the Falcon six into a Landy but you would have to check with the 4x4 shops or in the mag's.I still reckon the 186 is the way to go 'if you have already got all the gear to fit it. FWIW... little known secret. Red and blue 173s are thickwall castings and can be safely bored to 186 spec. Anyone who pays for a rebuildable 186 block is wasting money compared to what the 173 costs.

Bill, I was jibing about a set of brand new main and rod Ford bearings our man had expressed interest in. I've not trashed a Holden motor bottom end; they either seem to have tranny failure or head issues when it comes to "failure to proceed".
