I came across an '84 Benz yesterday at the local pick-n-pull. It had an inline 6 cylinder turbo charged diesel engine. I think the cars model number was 500 (or at least that's what it said until I removed all the emblems  ).

Does anyone know if this would be a suitable turbo charger for my 200?

Heres a pic...

I don't think that is a 500. Benz uses the number to basically denote engine size, so that would be 5 liter. That was usually a V-8 for Benz (but maybe not for the diesels).

More likely a 300 TD.

Actually it's more likely a 300SD(L) TurboDiesel.(I'm not sure if it was available in the LWB version that year)

The 300TD is a stationwagon like this:

The one you saw was probably more like this:

T is german for Station wagon (Turnier I think)

But that's beside the point

Hey Chris,

That looks like a Garrett turbo to me. Looks like T3 or maybe a T25. If you ever go by it again see if you can find some numbers on it. If you can get it cheap enough (it appears that the oil seals on it need to be replaced pretty bad) it wouldn't be bad to use for mock-up or initial testing.

How much boost are we talking anyway? I'm only looking for about 5-6 psi.

That turbo is capable of making plenty of boost (20lbs +) and on that diesel it probably made up to 15lbs with the factory setting.

From the picture, it appears to have an external wastegate. You probably want to find a turbo that has a wastegate integrated into the turbine housing. That will make the installation much simpler and much cheaper. Without the wastegate you'll overboost the motor and be picking up pieces of block and pistons on your first outing.
