how hard is it to add a tach to a 6 cyl. And what do you have to do?

I took a SunPro II tachometer and mounted it to my steering column and it only took about 10 minutes or so. You just have to wire in the power (to register the RPM's from your engine), the ground, and the wire to your light swith knob to turn on the tach's backlight for night driving.
I was very pleased with mine, and the tach I used cost around $30-$40 at Advanced Auto Parts.
They make the tach in several sizes, I chose the small one for mine (easy mounting, not a big eyesore, and easy to see over and around).

for a picture of it.

hey frdmustangcpe thanks for the wall paper thats a sweet ride man

That wire goes to the negative side of the coil, that also goes to the points or electronic ignition box. The tach should have a switch or some way to set it for a 6 cylinders.

Thanks "76Maveric". not bad for a first car.. but ive put lots of time in it.[/i]

Funny story about putting in a tach. Put a tach in my '63 conv. 200 ci. Every once in a while the tach would go crazy and jump up and down. Went on for about 2 weeks and went back to parts store where I bought it. A good friend owns the store so this just made it worse. Told him about problem with the tach and he went for a ride with me to try and figure out what was wrong with. Everything was fine while we were riding around and the tach worked perfect. He accused me of being nuts. As we were pulling back into the store parking lot it hit me like a ton of bricks as to what was wrong with the tach. When I turned on the turn signal the tach went nuts. The instructions said to hook the power wire to a wire that was only hot when the ignition was turned on. With the key turned on I located a hot wire under the dash and hooked to it. With the key turned on the wire was hot and did not alternate between on and off unless you turned on the turn signal. That was a year ago and I have not heard the end of it yet.

I cant get used to my 5 inch Tako. I never really wanted it but my engine parts supplier would not refund some exy springs and retainers I bought for my 250 that ended up being 140 pounds seat pressure instead of 90.
So I reluctantly settled on a good discounted Tako instead.
Only trouble is the thing flashes like crazy on the dial with all different colours depending on the rpm youre doing. Thats OK at day but at night its like a christmas tree and lights up the cabin of the car with flashing colors pink, yellow, geen ect and is very distracting.
To make things worse its got a drag light that comes on in your face with all different colours at various rpm. Ive lost the instructions and the first color red was set by the installer to come on at 3000 rpm. And every time the dam thing comes on my wife thinks the car is going to blow up (noisy exhaust as well) and I have to explain that 3000 really isnt to much for the engine. Im sure she thinks Im a crazy rev head. I wouldnt dare take it up to the redline with her in the car (too many lights on the way to explain).
And finally its so nice Ive got to cover it with an Acubra hat when I park it to stop it getting stolen.
Next time I better make sure I get the refund. Although it is kinda "pretty"

"Where did you run that wire?"

You run it to the negative side of the Ignition Coil. When you buy the tach it will come with full instructions (that will make it look a lot more complicated than it really is). Have you decided where you are going to mount your tach? I mounted mine to the top of the steering column (stanless hose clamp).

I have a small 3 inch one and I put it on the drivers side corner of the dash bord
