air sucking

Not sure if this is a problem or not but here it goes. My carb is making a very loud noise from sucking in air. Its so loud i can hear it over the turbo exhaust I have with the hood shut in my car. Anyone know whats going on here? I've got the BB200 with a 5200 bolted on. I just got through making all the adjustments and everything is in order in the carb, ignition timing, and vacuum areas. Any help would be great. Also, you can hear the noise w/ and w/o the air filter on.

As mentioned, the closed air cleaners are much quieter. You will also note that these cars do not have any underhood insulation to quiet down the engine noises.

I've also noticed this sucking sound at highway cruising speeds with my 1V. Could any of this sound be from air restriction in the stock air cleaner? Anybody noticed a difference when they swapped to an open element cleaner?

my 66 stock 170 with the stock 1bbl made that sucking sound like if you were to put your ear to the end of the hose on a shop vac. That loud SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH sucking sound.I think it's normal.Probably the air getting sucked into the carb and trying to make all those 90 degree turns in that crappy log intake I had.Key word HAD.Send the log to the guillotine MUAHAHAHAAAA!!!

the sucking, gulping noise is created by reflection due to the air cleaner base and lid. the bigger the air cleaner lid area, the more it will act as an echoing cavity, thus enhancing lower frequencies and sounding deep and hollow. The most voluminous deep sucking sound is created by filterless metal-or plastic scoops, as found on turbo- and cold air ducts.

I guess what I meant to ask is does the sucking sound indicate a restriction of air flow in the air cleaner that could be affecting peformance?

I don't believe the sound is generated by air passing thru the filter. Take the filter off, and the sound typically is louder. I have had some big 4 bbl carbs that were quite loud without and air filter and cleaner installed.

I just put an open element filter on the car (looks nice) and I have this deep sucking noise under the hood now. I first noticed it at around 20 mph when accelerating. I can pretty much here it all the time when not at idle now. Sounds cool. Car seems a little peppier. Maybe physcological though.
