Another cold air setup. "UPDATE"

Yep I did beat his prediction!

Grocery Getter,

If its over carbed with the 600 then why are the plugs not sooty and its not blowing out any black smoke at any point in the track. I had people watching last night and they said all the runs were clean with no smoke.

Heres all the times, The last 4 passes was with the shortest Holley secondary spring and the # 70 jets.

60' 2.28 1/8 mile 9.76 @ 72.57 1/4 mile 15.26 @ 88.07
60' 2.12 1/8 mile 9.56 @ 73.08 1/4 mile 15.04 @ 88.34
60' 2.11 1/8 mile 9.49 @ 73.43 1/4 mile 14.93 @ 89.17
60' 2.13 1/8 mile 9.55 @ 73.67 1/4 mile 14.96 @ 89.67
60' 2.27 1/8 mile 9.64 @ 74.00 1/4 mile 15.07 @ 89.29
60' 2.09 1/8 mile 9.39 @ 74.38 1/4 mile 14.76 @ 90.34
60' 2.09 1/8 mile 9.41 @ 74.02 1/4 mile 14.80 @ 90.15

60' 2.09 1/8 mile 9.39 @ 74.52 1/4 mile 14.7351 @ 90.38
60' 2.08 1/8 mile 9.34 @ 74.63 1/4 mile 14.69 @ 90.98
60' 2.08 1/8 mile 9.38 @ 74.49 1/4 mile 14.7309 @ 90.57
60' 2.08 1/8 mile 9.36 @ 74.51 1/4 mile 14.71 @ 90.58

The last 6 passes was leaving the line @ 1200 rpms and just standing on it instead of stalling it up against the convertor. The 2.28 & 2.27 pass was stalling it up to 3200 rpms and coming sideways off the line!

Later,

Doug

:D Doug, congradulations, that six is a rocket.
It can only get better, Bill

Hey Hey, what do ya know - You got that 60' down and your ET dropped like a rock! :)

~14.7 is a pretty respectable ET for an NA motor Doug. About time ;)

Congrats - and it sounds like there is more in it.

"over carbed" doesn't mean too much fuel. as we know, carbs are rated in air flow. if you over carb you'll often have to compensate with bigger jets to keep the A/F close.
i'd bet if you ran the same #70 jets in a 390cfm carb it would be on the fat side.

14.71 sec....not too shabby 8)

Thanks guys!! 8) 8)

Ian,

You were right....drop the 60' times and the et's dropped more than I would have thought!

Now if I can keep my 60' times down and get my mph up

I ran it through the same HP calculator I've been using and it says 170 hp @ the wheels and 212 @ the crank. Not as much as Mraleys but getting closer.

I'm also gonna pull the power valve to see what size it is, throw my vacuum gauge in the car so I can see whats happening on the top end and take my timing light with me. IIRC its set somwhere between 38 and 40 degrees total. I havent touched or even considered it since I originally took the car on its 1st test drive.

Bill,

Thats what a lot of people thought! Everytime I came up to the staging lanes after word of it got around there was 15 or 20 differant people that would come up and watch me race.

People were walking up to me in the pits wanting to look under the hood. It was the best racing and the most fun I've had at the track in years!

Gotta clean all the rubber off my quarter panels now!

Grocery Getter,

That might be the case but for drag racing I'd rather be over carbed than under carbed.

I wish I was having half the fun you're having... 8)

on the carb, the smaller carb will have better atomization= more HP
i'm not saying too small, just right. the venturi needs the correct velocity to pull and atomize the A/F mixture.

when you get the correct sized carb (and carb setup)

you'll have even more fun

more(HP)=More(fun)

Your right ...it is a lot of fun!!

Thats why we are doing the testing, no one knows for sure what cfm carb works the best on the new aluminum head.

Very impressive Doug!

How streetable is your car?

Your web site got me started on the six and your car is inspiring me to build a N/A power house.

Bob,

Whats your definition of streetable? I can turn the key and drive it down the sreet legally if thats what you mean but I wouldnt want to drive it in the rain or snow or on much more than a 100 mile round trip.

Thanks,

Doug

So parade or car show worthy, yes - drive it to work for fun probably not?

Of course, for those of us in CA the drive to work is a 100 mi round trip so our bar for "streetable" might be a bit higher.

Btw, I consider streetable to be:

"Babe, you need the honda today? No big deal - I'll just take the mustang to work."

If that sentence isn't applicable 300 days out of the year, then IMO your car isn't really streetable.

To be literal is worthless. You can drive just about anything on the street.

Ian,

Actually I drive it to work at least twice a week but thats only a 27 mile round trip. It has no choke so it wont idle by itself for the 1st 10 or 15 minutes until it gets thouroughly (sp) warmed up and until it does whenever you come up to a stop sign you have to keep one foot on the brake and another on the gas so it dont stall out.

You dont want to get on it on a wet road because of the locker, 225/60/15 tires and the stall convertor. Its also very loud with the 40 series flowcans that dump out in front of the rear axle and I removed the rear seat and all the sound deadener on the floor so you get the full effect when you drive it down the road at 60 mph which means its pulling 3500 rpms on the tach.  :D

I drive it on the street and have fun with it as could you but it would not be streetable for 75% of the people on the forum so I guess the answer would be no for most people.

Well, that does sound like a pain in the ass, but still streetable to me. :)

Sounds a lot like my Camaro in which I commuted to college/work 60+ miles daily for several years to the tune of ~100k miles.

Oh the days of 1.50 gasoline... Driving in the rain was always an adventure. (275/40/R17 Kumho's in the rain = 45 mph on the freeway :( ). 1-2 shift on a left turn was always exciting.

LOL well done!

Where in the world did you find a Boss 429 hood scoop?

Looks like its coming together quite well.

Im glad your enjoying your "testing" sessions. No one really knows what these engines can do as we have never really had the ability to build good horsepower before with a honest to god performance head.

Hats off to your pioneering spirit...and your new times!

I found it on ebay from a place called Mustangs Unlimited so instead of having to go through the whole bidding process, I just called them up and talked them out of it for the ebay price and had them ship it the same day 😉

Thanks!

That's my definition of streetable! You can drive it on the street legally, lol. That would be a blast to go cruising in on a Saturday evening.

You have done a remarkable job on your car. Getting into the 14's with a N/A six is a hell of an accomplishment and I think you will continue to improve upon that.
