I am currently overhauling a 226, with lightened fly, cam, compression etc., and am interested in finding another block at least, to build up another. I have seen mention of a 254, but have found little info on them. I have all the guts for another 226, so i would be interested in a bare block, or whatever you are willing to part with. I live in the Los angeles area, am willing to travel, and am going to texas in a couple of weeks....

The 254 "M" Ford 6 was introduced in 1948 trucks, hence the 8M designation and 8MTH cast on the block below the distributor. It had a 200 thousandths larger bore and the same stroke as the 226. It has siamese cylinders 1&2, 3&4, and 5&6. It uses a different head with larger chambers, which has the same bolt pattern as the 226. Intake and exhaust manifolds interchange as the bolt patterns are the same. 254 ports average 30 to 50 thousandths larger than 226 ports. Valves are the same size. These engines are hard to find but occasionall show up on ebay. Some come available out of frost control wind machines in citrus groves in your area. These are industrial models used in all kinds of equipment as power units. These are usually in good shape and stock unrebuilt after 60 years of very little use. Other places to look, F6 Ford trucks 1948 to 1953. The truck ones are usually pretty tired, have burnt valves and sometimes cracks on the deck. They were underpowered for truck use which caused a lot of full throttle work and with bad vacuum advance diapharagms ran retarded and hot. Many were changed out for 292 Ford V8s

thanks again for the valuable info. I will definitely keep an eye out for one of these blocks. My current 226 is at a tired .060, so I would like to wait for another block to invest in larger valves, etc. However, I am currently just going to give it one more on the ring/ bearing, and use my new head, etc. I have seen .080 over pistons listed, but intermittently.....
Any advice on going .080 for the futre ? or should i just keep looking for a spare block for the next build-up?

In the olden days brave Ford 6 racers bored these things out to as much as 3 & 7/16 and some as much as 3 & 1/2. .080 should not be much of a problem except for finding pistons and rings.

I just pulled a 226 "G" from a '46 Coupe. Was a runner and now have the head off. I'm going with a 302 so the 226 can go. It has all its accessories (starter, carb, generator, distributor, fuel pump, etc.) along with an extra head, NOS distributor, starter, water pump and generator. All of that can go as a package so make me an offer. Also have the 3-speed transmission, and other drive train parts if you need any of that. I'm in Orange County, CA.

Hey thanks !
I guess I should be more specific though, as I am looking for either the H or M series, sice I already have some parts.

thanks again
