anyone have their stock exhaust manifold split into two?

Ok heres the deal, I want to try and get my chero to have that sound like the 38's and 40's lowriders i wont mention which type of cars they are but i'm sure u guys know who makes them :roll: . well i want like that backfire noise so from what i have heard all those cars have had their manifold split and run straight pipes and so on, and plus is cheaper then buying headers and around here i have found a few places that will split mines for under 100 bucks. Have any of you ever tried this on ur manifolds??? and did u encounter any problems? also any chance of getting the same results as those cars or am i just wasting my money here????
 
if I was goign to get it done I might see if I could find a couple ball and sicket style outlets to have welded on in place of the gasket style like mine are. I am thinking of doing this myself since my father is a certified cast iron welder (repairs heads for certain diesel manufacturer) and have two manifolds at home.
not sure if for a DIY setup that a charcol pit and buzz box would be all you need.

Howdy All:

The problem is the siamized center 3/4 exhaust port, both in the head and the cast manifold. I've seen manifolds split in a 4/2 configuration, which sounded pretty good. It may be possible to get a true split 1,2,3/4,5,6 split by using an exhaust port divider and then weld walls in the cast manifold. This configuration creates two systems of three cylinders firing at 120 degree intervals, 60 degrees opposite each other.

To get the sound of the 50's inliners, mostly GMC's and Chevy's, they split their exhaust manifold by joining the 1st cylinder and the siamized 2nd & 3rd cylinders. The back half was done the same way. Each had a flat gasket flange. Both halves exited through their own straight pipe. Some used Smitty's or glass packs, the predecesser of Cherry Bombs. If you use mufflers, mount them as far forward as possible.

It also help to increase the compression to get "The Sound"

For the back-fire tune your carb rich and turn the ignition off and on when decelerating. Please note that back-firing is very hard on your engine and potentially dangerous. And Straight pipes are very hard on your hearing.

our first mustang motor, we used the late style manifold and gutted the cat. installed a port divider and welded a divider were the cat was. this made an expansion chamber of sorts. we then added a 3" outlet pipe. it worked! i'm sure you could split the can and make two outlets theres plenty of room check it out.

My exhaust fell off my manifold and it sounded tuff. Before I bought my new manifold, my old one split itself towards the back and it would do exactly what you are talkin about. It would sound wicked till you let off the gas then it would pop all the way till it came to a stop, lol. It was great. Anyways, I wanted to just run a pipe straight off the manifold and to the side, never got around to it, but it sounded good open manifold.

so will a donor manifold to get the flange off of and a small steel divider plate be all you need? and some Ni rod for welding it all together? I got a buzz box and a mig and a bandsaw and a spare manifold so I am ready to make this happen.

I have seen people talk about brazing it all together also. I will also check but I might have a bad turbo manifold I could cut up and weld to the donor leftovers for a cast turbo manifold.
