I have a 1969 Mustang with a 250ci L6. My question is would I be better off building up the 250 or should I look for a 200 to build. I've been told that a built up 200 would be better then building up my 250. Thanks

Im no expert, however if you have the 250 I would replace it with one.
Just get a good ballance job on high grade parts.
You night be unhappy with the torque of the 200?
But what do I know, good luck with what ever you decide.

i'm not a experet on the 250 x flow i am right into the ohc set up but..

I'd do the 250 as well,

a australian 250 x-flow head (alloy one) not sure if efi head is better but i'msure someone will say so.

a set of 200 rods with apropiate pistons in the bores

a set of roller rockers port/polished head and larger valves with a good cam.

if ur adventurous you can go tripple webbers or efi, if not a redline manifold with a good carb (350 holley or 500??)

a top loader gearbox and some 3.7 gears in back

and you'll have one fairly quick 250. not to mention the extra benefit ofc 50 cubes over the 200 so thus more torque.

cheers.joe.

Ive driven both the 200 and the 250. The 200 does feel a bit week and spineless after a 250. Its the torque in a 250 and where it is available in the rpm that is very desirable when comparing Aussie sixes.
I spoke to one guy who had a 200 and then replaced it with a 250 in his Cortina and he thought the 200 was more fun to drive but remmember this is with a lighter car. That extra Torque is certainly nice to have.
Put simply I wouldnt trade the extra torque and gain in power 250 has for the Aussie long rod 200s revability. Might be OK if you were intending to spend big money on valve train and better diff ratio.

I agree with Tim and Joe. The 250 is stronger than an ox on steriods when modified. A set of 2.5 HSC rods (6") and pistons (1.60" tall) from a Tempo/Topaz, and a nice thick gasket so the pistons don't hit the head, and you'd have a bomb proof rever. One of those 264 cams, a tubing header and a 500 Holley on a post 1978 head from a Granada with enough combustion chamber for a 9:1 compression, a la Mustang Geezer.

And a tough C4 or 4-speed Toploader. Wish I was American....
