First off, for all you that responded to my post on the MSG ignition, thank you. Im going to end up with the petronix dist. and an MSD 6a ignition(i just need to figure how to hook up now LOL) Anyways on to this subject...

For those of you that havent read my other post let give you an idea what Im going to do (or plan to do)
-Peacemaker headers
-Weber 44 idf carb
-Petronix dist. w/ MSD 6A ignition
-264 D3 cam
-eaton hydraluic lifters
-chrome molly push rods
-SI port flow oversized valves

Almost all of these parts are from fordsixparts.com and I cant wait to start. But have a few questions. How much horsepower should i gain with this. Im running a 200 six right now. Im planning on decking the block .030 and also shaving the head by about that much. Im also planning on boring the cylinders .040. Are there any other low cost upgrades i could make to improve horsepower?

Thanks

Well, wiring the MSD and Pertronix up is simple.

As far as the other stuff, I'll through some numbers out:

1) Headers: 5-10HP (but get a port divider from Cliffordperformance.com)
2) Weber: Maybe a few HP, but what you are really gaining is better breathing at higher RPMs
3) Pertronix: not HP gain, but will run a lot smoother
4) MSD 6A: again, may 1-2HP, but mostly better running and mileage
5) 264 Cam: My guess, another 10 HP or so
6) Lifters and pushrods: No real HP gain, but you engine will like you and it make make you reve easier
7)Oversized Valves: 5-10HP From talking with other people who put oversized valves on a log head, they said this really helps.

All in all, I guess you'd gain probably about 15-25HP for all that. would probably put you close to 90 RWHP. WHile it doesn't sound like much, right now you are probably at 65-70 RWHP, so it's about a 33% increase.

Remember, all these numbers are guesses from I've heard other people talk about when they did these and from when I did them using a butt-o-meter to measure gains.

Port & polish the head and you'll pick up another 10-15 hp or so and you'll have to unshroud the combustion chambers also (especially with the bigger valves!!) :D :D

Only bore as big as you need to. The extra HP from going to + 40 when you could have gone + 20 is not worth "sentencing" the block for. It's nice to know you still have at least one rebore up your sleeve.

I vote for a recurved DSII ahead of the Pertronix. The latter relies on the distributor advance being correct and fully operational; IMO it is marketed as a "DIY" option because it is simple. Sure, a recurved vacuum/mech points distributor with Ptx will go as well as DSII, but the cost difference will be negligible or possibly it may be dearer.

If you have to "budget down", ignition and carb are the priorities. A set of headers maybe next, as they are complimentary with any other, later mods.

Cheers, Adam.

You said port and polish the head, what exactly does that mean? Also, is that a significant increase in horsepower? Is it really worth 660 bucks for only 15-25 horses? Becuase the valves will not add horse power like you said, is it really necessary to do them? Im not going to be really racing the car and if i dont do them, that will save me almost 100 bucks.

u can port and polish the head yourself with a bit of practice, then it will only cost u the price of abrasives. to find out what its about, just check out my website and there is a link to a good head porting guide.

Well, you have to keep one thing in mind...% increase.

10HP increase for a stock 200CI engine, is about 15% increase. The % are right, but when you start comparing, the raw numbers won't seem that high.

Enlarged valves will increase the breathing ability of the engine, and thus increase the power it can produce. Otherwise, no one would ever enlarged the valves.

Porting and polishing isn't hard, just time consuming. 10-20hours of work for mild porting and polishing.

couldnt u just get different rockers of a different ratio to open the valves more, rather than increasing the valve size?

Heres one of my webpages that explains porting & polishing a ford inline head in a bit more detail
