Cam Play Question - 289

Question for the engine specialists who have high tech knowledge.

I have a 289 short block I am trying to sell off. I just found out the cam sprocket was broken into 2 pieces. After removing the timing set, I found that the cam has a good 1/4" play fore and aft. Is this too much or withing specs? If not, what would be the cause? I would assume the specs would be similar to our 6 bangers.

This engine was in my 64 Ranchero that got in a very bad wreck. The entire front end was pushed into the fan assembly which most likely was the cause of the sprocket to break. I am bewildered that the engine even ran after rebuilding the front end and driving the car for some time. It did have a serious problem overheating, even after replacing the radiator and installing a high quality water pump.

Well, someone over at TFFN solved the problem. There was a 1/4 spacer originally used on the stock engines. The aftermarket sprockets have the spacer added onto the back. That takes up the play.

When I checked the end play, the sprocket was off, thus giving me false readings. After reinstalling what was left of the sprocket onto the cam shaft, the play was removed.

Another technical issue was learned today boys and girls. Cars are just so much fun!
