A newbe here. I just got a 1963 falcon with a 170. My question is what is the best carb I can get for performance? Also I would like to get a 3 speed auto trans (2 speed right now) what kind would bolt right in?

Thanks for the help

The Ford Six Performance book affirms the Weber 32/36 2-bbl carb. It's backed up by a few others here. Get a pre 1974 one from a Pinto, and follow the other guys here on the jet sizes. It is lean when its cruising, and nice an rich at wide open throttle. You'll get good economy, and great extra power. The little 170 is a nice low-drag engine design. The four bearing crank and longish rods with a short stroke and a light weight block, theres not much that can go wrong. There is another post here which covers the need to identify the need to consider the existing distributor. Until some-one figures out the vaccum arangement, t may be better to look for a single jug carb that is a little bigger.

Howdy Chris:

My 1st choice for your situation would be a rebuilt 1100 Autolite for a '65 200 in a Falcon. It will up CFM from 150 to 185 and be visually identical to your stock carb. All fuel & vacuum and the stock air cleaner will bolt rught up & you'll maintain the function of your Load-a-Matic distributor. The difference is in the diameter of the venturi in side the throat of the carb. You stock 170 should have a 1.10" venturi and the 200 will have a 1.20"

It would be a good idea to determine what head # and Block # you're working with.

Hi Guys,
I am in the same situation, but mine is a '63 Comet. David recommends the Autolite 1100. Anyone know what the 170 w/ auto tranny would have on my car. When I look it up on carb seller websites, it shows '63-'64 Comet as having a ford or motorcraft 1100. It does look just like nine in the pix. What is the difference & how specific will I need to be to get the Autolite 1100 & know that it's not what I already have? Any ideas? Any recommended vendors?

Thanks,

Howdy DavidK:

Ford and Motorcraft are AKAs for Autolite. Assuming your '63 Comet carb is OEM it is indeed an Autolite/Ford/Motorcraft 1100. The difference is that yours was an automatic choke version. Falcon's came with manual chokes til '66. Only Comets & Meteors had automatic chokes.

EXecutes suggestion is a good one, but the Autolite 1100 for a 200 will be a direct bolt-on with no change to linkage, lines or air cleaner for a stock appearing, nice increase in power.

Thanks for the advice and quick response. Keep them coming. think I will go with the Webber I know that carb well. I got a progressive on my bus.

Thanks
