carb question

i went to rebuild my carb today because it wobbled. so i took it off and found out that like 3 of the screw holes were stripped so i have 2 useless carbs at my house. a 9771 and a 8111 both holleys. my questions are. would it be smog legal to go to 2 barrel? if not what would be the best replacement 1 barrel for a 1980 mercury capri 200 with auto tranny?

I would think it depends on where you live. In my neck of the woods, I believe you would be exempt from emissions testing...

if you have to pass a sniffer test, no one has to be the wiser what carb and smog devices you are actually running - as long as your car passes the test.

You may have to ask your local authorities first - some states are not interested in how clean your exhaust gases really are, but just care about a "factory" setup - even if it runs worse.

dual venturis don´t neccessarily mean double CO and NOX.

I think it depends on the shop you take it to. If it's a shop that's 100% on the up and up, they will send you to a referee station. There are plenty of shops that either simply won't notice, or will overlook it for a fee.

Strictly speeking it's not smog legal unless;

You go to a referee station (personally I'd rather have a root canal without novacaine)

The carb and adapter carry a CARB exception sticker.

It was a factory option.

You'll still have to pass the sniff test as well.

the low-budget option would be to SLIGHTLY enlarge the stripped holes and tap them to a larger size it the wall around them is thick enough. i did that on my old YF before i gave up on it.
as for smog legalities, i know a guy who cheats the system by having a PO box in the middle of nowhere, so thats his formal "mailing adress", so he's exempt through that, even though he lives in Seattle

You could also try getting Heli-coil kits at NAPA (other places have them as well). Just make sure you get the right size.

Throughout the 70´s we had SO MANY changes in smog equipment, sometimes several in one model year, and even the repair manuals have contradicting information. Nobody will know exactly what carb & smog voodoo combo was used on a particular car after 20 years. So, that leaves you another option: use OEM parts, make it look bone stock, and make sure it complies to federal smog laws.

In Kali, do they still test suspicious vehicles on the roadside?

edit: Ive just seen a picture of your ride, in your url... nice paint and scoops... uhm, well, so far for my advice with "looking stock"...

No too much experience with smogged cars in CA. Don't play by their rules by owning pre-67 that are exempt. I drive all over the Bay Area, N. CA., and never seen a roadside smog check, but there are billboards asking your fellow motorist to turn-in gross polluters. Even when I had to smog my old cars, they had to pass a sniff test and a visual. For example, your car couldn't have mechanical secondaries if it didn't come stock. Damn rules change yearly. Who knows...
Recently, registered my '66 Ranchero, new plates and all, didn't need a thing - no one time smog or anything. Used to be even old cars had to get a smog test when changing ownership, but not anymore. Like I said, they change every year.

yeah they still have roadside tests. i had a friend get tested on the side of the freeway. i'm not worried though. i just want to get it registered because i have no car right now.

I heli-coiled two stripped holes in the '70 MotoCraft replacement carb on my '65. They were on the accel pump assmebly. It wasn't pretty, but the bolts have held and its leak free. Try it!
