Stock holley 1946 1-barrel on the 200block I have it dismantled I bought that $10 bucket of carb cleaner parts where u dip it well i've always scrubb brushed it for a good 2 and half hours I got almost all the golden/brownish buildup off but inside im having trouble be able to get down there to clean the greenish brownish buildup anyone know of a good spray on cleaning thats pretty powerful? im going to do a very detailed gloss black paintjob to this carb to see how the cosmetics come out=)

ya I was using the gunk 3quart tub yer suppose to dump the carb inside and let it sit... well I didnt follow directions I let it sit for 8hours and now its so friggen shiny clean it looks brand new=)

Man, I would never recomend painting a carb. Just too many things to go wrong there, and the paint will likely be peeling off after a week anyhow, as gas+paint=mess.

If you really must have a better looking carb (regardless of function) than send it to one of the places (like Ponycarbs) that will replate it for you.

Hi,

I don't know they sell these in Usa but I use Carb Cleaner from Ipone. Works very well.
Painting a carb is indeed not a good idea,there are no many paints incessant gas. Besides the aluminium carb surface is very smooth. If you gonna paint it has to be a little coarse, so don't forget to abrade a little bit.
I've polished mine whit a dremel and the right products, it's not that hard :wink:
Just be careful and good cleaning when it's all done.

what bit should I use and what kinda stuff should I use for the polishing?

also forgot, I wire brushed it and man that aluminium looks INCREDIBLE.. looks brand new right now and shiny all I need is a polishing dremel thingy=)

i recommend berryman's carb cleaner...that thing works like crazy and is strong as hell...it took the paint off my head log from just the overspray...so i think it will get the job done

Hi gumpn,

First my excuse for my English, i'm a Belgian you know. :wink:

Polishing is easy and cheap. The only thing you need is time. But the result is worth it.
First clean your carb (get everything out!) and work on a clean desk.
Get sandpaper, i use this numbers:

1 ==> P220
2 ==> P360
3 ==> P600
4 ==> P1200
5 ==> (don't know the english word :oops: ) ironwool? nr. 000

The best buy is waterproof paper, so you can grind wet. The paper stand langer and there's no dust (aluminium dust is no healthy)
If the surface is realy coarse you can use first a P180 (not for carb = aluminium ==> deep scratches).
So you grind....grind...grind and grind :lol: in that order and be shure you take all the scratches out. Pay attention to make no angles round.

Then clean your carb (water is ok) now you shoud have a fluffy egal surface.
Now take the dremel.
I use polishing sticks, it's a little wool ball.
You need also polish, i use Belgom (not shure you can get it in US) but there are several other products, the important thing is to use a very refined product.
No you have to polish put a little bit belgom on the carb and use the dremel, don't push hard and don't make the surface too hot.
After a while you gonna see it shine. Polish as long as you want (own taste), but yes if you polish long enough you can see yourself in it :P

To finish you shining carb use some wax and clean it with white towels.
Now you got a beautiful (heat reflective !!!) carb!

Succes! (and lot's of patient :D )
