i'm going to try a carter rbs carb, got one cheap with a rebuild kit on ebay. based on my mods listed below, anyone have suggestions for jetting to get it close at the start?

thanks for any help....

Howdy back Scott:

I'd start with stock settings. Be sure to write down the details when you have it apart for the rebuild, then begin the assessment from there.

Enjoy the journey.

I'd be interested in any insight on this carb. It is a decent carb once it is warmed up. Mine seems to take forever to start after sitting for a couple days. I have to pump it around 12 times or so to get a reaction out of it.

Howdy All:

Apologies to Scott for hyjacking his topic, But-

Shrinkdude- The Carter RBS is a very good, relatively simple design. It suffers from the same weaknesses most Autolite, Carter and Holley one barrel carbs. That being a weak accelerator pump system- more specifically the diaphram on the plunger. They are also very suseptable to dirt and crud, the hot air draw for the choke is a major contributor here. The solution is to clean and rebuild them periodically. Kits are relatively cheap and the rebuild is easy. Be sure to clean thoroughly before reassembly.

They function similar to all Carters with a vacuum operated metering rod system that serves as both the main jet and power valve enrichment system.

Your specific problem may be due to a very low float setting, evaporation issues due to the bowl vent not sealing completely, weak accelerator pump, percolation, or (most likely) a combination of several of these.

Most likely you will be able to resolve most of these issues with a thorough cleaning and installation of a rebuild kit.

I cleaned and rebuilt mine. I also removed all the choke mechanism. I let my car sit for a week at a time, pump the accelerator pedal once then turn the key. The engine starts and I go on my way.

I cleaned and put the rebuild kit on it and still takes forever. I did plug the choke hole, maybe that might hurt it too.
I am looking into a 2bbl conversion so I might not have to worry about it too much longer.
