Ceramic coating on my header

I had my header ceramic coated when I first got it about three years ago. What I have noticed now is some minor flaking of the coating. Is there an quick, easy, and effective way of fixing this? I don't particularly want to have it re-coated, but I will if necessary.

...........Cheers, Alex

I need alternatives for older headers. A set of used Hookers I just got . are painted with flat hi-temp grey but I see rust anywhere it's abraided. I am going to try POR-20 hi-temp stuff, the POR stuff is hard but not consistent for me. Another pair I have, in a car are rusty, where the weld flash is. Those were a bright silver I also bought used.

PS: Hookers have round beads art the flange surface. the Hooker guy said DON'T grind flat. The silver headers are with original bead . The new(er) ones have the center dual port ground flat and the outer have been flattened partially. Gskets and bolts are tricky with any headers.

i'll probably try the por as well on my old clifford header. let me know how it works for you

Of all the headers I've sold with the Jet Hot, I've only had two complaints. One was due to over heating by running a lean mixture. The headers were to the point where they were red hot, and obviously well over 1700 degrees.

The other was on Kelly's falcon. Will and I both knew we would exceed the temp rating, but thought we would give it a try anyway. The coating dulled out in some spots, but didn't chip or crack as far as I remember. Jet Hot was knid enough to recoat them anyway, even tho they knew it was a temp issue. Just goes to show you how they stand behind their coatings. However, I'm not saying they would do this everytime. I think it was more as a favor to me since I do a lot of business with them.

When you install coated headers, you need to make sure you are not running lean, before you install them. A lot of guys bolt them onto a new motor, then run the heck out of it during the breakin period. Thus they have no idea if they are running lean as they haven't tuned the motor, or nailed the mixture. This will void the warrantee, and it's easy for JH to see when they are sent in for recoat.

The best thing to do is to install the old cast manifold during the breakin. Then once everything is right, pull the cast ones off and install the new headers. This avoids running them hot and damaging the coating, and keeps the warrantee intact.

There are a lot of other coatings out there. Just look in the Yellow Pages. I'm not sure if they are better or worse, or what they offer for temp ratings and/or warrantee. I just know JH is one of the best in the business and I've been very please with them in every aspect.
