anyone know the CFM for a Carter carb for a 300...probably from a the late 70's early 80's?

as you can guess...I am still trying to replace my carb with an affordable option...

yes, I know this will have a larger opening...but WILL THE BOLTS BE SAME SPACING?

Howdy Chaz:

IIRC the YF for the 300 engine was rated at 220 cfm and stands slightly taller than YFs used on 200s.

If the bolts don't quite line up you can always elongate, or slot the mounting holes on the base of the carb. I had to do this to get a 1101 to fit onto a C8 head. I also had to enlarge/taper the stock adapter to allow the butterfly to work. My guess is that the YF for a 300 would use the larger base and bolt spacing.

You might want to talk with Doug, aka Mustang Geezer. He went through the process of getting one to work on his Mustang. I seem to recall that he had to take some unusual measures to get a decent idle. Part and WOT were rewarding.

this will help my search....I also will talk to him...

quick second question...a carb off a 250 is a way better flowing carb than my 200...right?

I saw one of those for sale too...

I would say so. I'm not positive but most 250's had the carter RBS early on and thats what I have now. Runs great for a 1 bbl and very, very easy to maintain and rebuild. I even took the jet out and enlargened the hole with a mig tip cleaner to let er drop a little more fuel and it worked great...it's just after driving a beastly 429 Cobra Jet in a 77 Mustang....nothing seems to satisfy me as well :? But thats what hot rodding is about...kick it up and kick it up until you can't no more...and then kick it up again!

Hey chaz,

Why not get the carb (YF) off of a 240 inline 6. At $120 rebuilt and no need to rejet, it is a steal. That is what I have done to my bronco's 200 and it is great. I finally got it running right after going through two tanks of bad gas and got the timing on spot (15 degrees BTDC, premium fuel, and 7.5 to 1 CR, and checked that TDC is dead-on with timing mark at 0). I think the reason I can run more timing is from the lower CR, but it pulls hard off bottom (better than it did before, and that is by the seat of your pants feel) and will stay there thru 4500 rpm (my max rpm). Remember the 200 is all stock other than the ram air intake and what have you got to lose, other than money. Good luck.

i had put the same exact carburator on my falcons 144. it fit by taking off one of the spacer things and making a funky custom lickadge out of an old auto trans valvebody plate. i never did run the carb though cause it had a bad accelerator pump and i still couldn't get the thing to run(even with the other carb) i took mine off a 300 in my sisters 73 f100. if you still want to run it though i could probably get pic and measurements of how i did mine. it only took about 30 min. the only problem was that its tall, so your on your own for an air filter.
