Okay, we finally fixed the skip in my neighbors Mustang. Went out and stood on it and blew out a huge cloud of soot (previous owner was an 80 year old woman.) Runs perfect now. Upon acceleration, I noticed that if you press down the gas too far, the car acts like it is drowning and stops gaining speed. Let up on the gas some and it starts to gain speed again. It also will skip and miss during hard accelaration. It has a new set of plugs, wires, dizzy cap, all the good stuff. Also, we are running it with the air cleaner lid flipped upside down. Will this hurt anything?

One last thing, what are the horsepower and torque ratings for a stock 200?

Howdy Back Jeb:

It sounds like it's ready for a tune-up-in-a-can! Gumot or Techron through the gas tank will help.

It also sounds like the accelerator pump in the carb is weak. Check it out by removing the air cleaner. Prop open the choke butterfly and work the throttle. You should see a squirt of raw gas as you work the throttle. It you don't, or if the squirt is weak, it's time for a carb rebuild. The new pump stuff is part of the kit.

Flipping the lid won't hurt anything, but it won't help much either. YOu would do better to duct outside air into the air cleaner snorkle.

Check out our website below my signature. There is a spec page for all engines from 1960 to 1982. Remember, 1965 was listed in gross HP reading and is not comparable to today's net, or rear wheel, real world HP.

Have you tried increasing the initial advance yet?

Adios, David

Okay, we dumped a couple of bottles of gas treatment into it and some octane booster. We traded cars and I drove the Mustang 8) for about a week and my neighbor drove my Duster . The Mustang ran slightly better but is still a turd below 40 MPH. I hit the Interstate with it and I thought I was going to grow old trying to make it up the onramp. It runs great at about 70 MPH and has lots of power. I checked the accelerator pump and it is working fine. Is the timing supposed to be set at TDC? And what is intial advance. I am averaging about 18 MPG.

P.S. People at the gas stations love the Mustang. They are disappointed when I tell them it is a six. They have a lot to learn. :D
