Difference in exhaust manifolds.

I read that the '64-'67 200 exhaust manifolds differ from the '68+. How are they different? I need to purchase a 'new' exhaust manifold but I am fairly sure my engine is not the original (year)

1960-1962 uses a flat gasket between the ex flange and pipe. 1963-1970 uses a donut gasket between the tailpipe connection and the exhaust manifold. This help any?

It confused me a lot, seeing as how those are not the cutoff years I read about.

As far as I know, the 68 and later have a larger volume. The Cali smog engines were a 67-68 thing (that thermactor designation), I think.

After 62 they got a larger outlet hole and were beefed up too.

...and can someone explain how the choke affects the exhaust manifold? I'm not saying it doesn't, I just don't know what the relationship is.

Also, I see ones on Ebay that describe a 1.5" carburetor opening?

I have a '66, but there was no carburetor opening that I could see.

The manifold I have now just had one, little metal tube about .25" in diameter stick in to the top of the manifold. There were no other hoses/connections. Can someone identify my year manifold from that bit of info?

That's not a carburetor opening, it's a "carburater" opening.

:?:

It's for making the engine run more faster when the "gasaleen" gets burneded up....

After all, the biggest problem with these sixes is that too much of the fuel is combusted in the engine. This way you can get more bang juice into your muffler where it can make cool noises while you sit in your driveway, everyone knows that you dummy!

I think he's thinkin' about exh. opening but sayin' intake opening. I think the .25 tube on your old manifold went to the choke.

I won't pretend I know jack about trannys, but my exhaust manifold has the same setup, and the tube runs to the tranny. There's no connection between the carb and the exhaust manifold at all.

Does yours run to your choke?

on my exhaust manifold there was a hot air tube that comes off the pipe and goes into the choke to heat t up. its sealed off from the actual exhaust gasses though if that makes any sence.

im not too famiular with the earlier style but there is a pretty bog hole in the "collector" area of my 76's where the smog pump line threaded in. i just put a bolt into it.

my tranny had a 1/4 inch vac line that runs to the intake manifold

Casting number is very difficult to read. From what I could tell, it is one of following, the lower numbers may be substitutions.

C3AE-9430-A
E...0....0..8
.....D....3

The most important part is the first two spaces - C3 means 63. E3 would be 83.

I'm thinking yours is a 63.

I've hit another snag.

I cleaned up the casting. The first four are C3DE.

C3 means 63-67. I am looking at some manifolds on Ebay. Two castings listed are:

C3OZ-9430 63-67

C8DE-9480 68+

This throws me off even more! C3DE is the casting number of both mixed together, is it not?

Also, this one has a carburetor opening, something my manifold did/does not have.

The real important detail is what sort of interface do you have with your exhaust pipe ?

Does it use the steel mesh donut gasket, or a flat style of gasket ?
