Distributor gear revisited...

You can all say "I TOLD YOU SO!!". I have to change the gear on my thing again - the genuine ford item that cost me $50 wore out in about 2000km. I just aquired another gear, this one is from Crow. It too cost me $50 but I hope it is the last one I ever have to change (otherwise financial control may kill me... she is usually pretty tolerant, though). It seems to me that this problem is not as well known in the trade as it could be, my engine machine shop has never seen it on a crossflow falcon unless a high volume oil pump was fitted- my vehicle only has the standard part. Oh well, you live and you learn!

Does anyone want to buy a low kilometres efi dissy gear? Only slighly worn, looks great in the dark. It even has teeth on it still!

Do you guys think the heavy duty gear that Crow sell would be good enough to suit a Megatork cam?

Cheers

Yes, I learnt the hard way, see my post a while back. Get theHD gear and you wont have to worry about it again.

im using a monster wade cam with the crow gear..
Id check it every 10,000 km to be safe mate
It will be great it will work great

Excellent.. sounds good

Which would you guys do first - Distributor Regraph, or Dyno tune? Which has more power to be had? Cheers

found out that the crow distributor gear ie DG1 and 2 is a standard Ford gear that has been nitrided / tufftrided. Looks like the standard gear metal content is o.k, but the heat treat they use is insufficient. It would be possible to get the standard gear heat treated oneself if so desired.

At the risk of making me look like a goose (not hard for me, people tell me!) I pose this question - I popped the dissy cap off the wagon yesterday and felt for slop in the dissy drive - there is already a tiny bit of movement..... How much slop (rotational) is normal? The gear has done about 1000km. Do I still have to worry? Should I start saving for a cam, etc. now? If yes, how do I keep in the fun police (the good lady, my missus) good books? Any ideas?

Thanks, Kendall.

The dissy top bush is new - XF distributors have only a bush at the top. I wonder if the end float was wrong what it could do?? PS... an el-cheapo 5/16, 1/4 drive socket (eg the crap supercheap variety) silversoldered to the end of a worn out screwdriver makes an excellent tool for turning the oil pump!
