Can you believe it? I came out onto the highway accelerating hard and all of a sudeen, BAM! I thought I had blown a head gasket. But no, something inside the rebuilt ds2 distributor locked up and sheared 3 teeth off , We checked the gear in the engine and turned the oil rod, all looked fine. Went to the junkyard, $40 got us another, installed it and it's running fine. I was worried about the loose teeth hurting the motor but eveyone says not to worry, they'll be in the bottom of the pan. The parts store is going o replace the bad one so I'll have a spare. Has anyone hard of this occuring before...

Alloydave blew up his dizzy in a similar manner, bu the engine was barely run in. Here, Crow recommend their own new gear to go with their cams.

Side play in the shaft bushings can be one reason the dizzy jams. The others are worn teeth, a mech advance that fails and embeds in the inside of the housing (Lucas territory  ), and an overloaded oil pump.

Adam.

8) I'd be tempted to drop the pan....just to be sure I found the broken teeth in there. If not........I'd start to worry about where they are

I was worried about it too, may still do it. I did pick up one of those magnet drain plugs. I'll see what that grabs. We were gonna put the other bucket seat in today but ended up wasting the day with this. Guess it could have been worse. My educamation just won't quit!

BTW...I'm dropping off the rear seat to be recovered to match the new fronts. Guy quoted me 150$ to do it!!! I would not have believed it but I saw some of his work and it's good enough for me. Also quoted door panels at 45$ each...another guy in town had quoted $2000 to do the front, back, and panels.

   USD 2000
It ought to be show winning authentic for that money.

Any forensic results on the old unit?

The quote on one of my Valiants was $1200 Au to do front and rear seats, 4 door trims, carpet, kick panels, and rear parcel shelf. 8)

I wasn't smart enough to check, it's at the store where I bought it. I'll try to find out tmrw.

mate , pull your sump and do a check of your cam gear and fishout any crap .Mine buggered out but didnt lose any teeth ,just wore most of the teeth off .I found quite a bit of crap in the sump .Im now in the process of
changing my cam as it has worn the cam gear so bad there is play in the
dissy .You can pull the sump with the engine in place ,just get a new sump gasket ,a couple of hours work is good peice of mind .
