Distributor

Hi
I have another question on distributors.I have a pertronix Ignitor right now on my stock 170 distributor and it seems to work fine although my idle seems a little high.
When I am rebuilding my 200 to drop in,I need to find a distributor and I have looked at the DUI but which one do I buy. There seems to be choice but the only one I see for an inline 6 is for a 240-300.
Also,if I decided to go the DSII setup with module, where do I buy or do I need to p/u from scrapyard?
Sorry for all the questions, but I am trying to get this started so I am ready to drop in by earl to late spring.
Also,is there a big upgrade from DUI-DSII-Pertronix?

Thanks

Thanks for the info.
I need to buy a distributor regardless but this is 500 bucks.Am I saving that much by going to the DSII.I think that the DUI is the way I want to go.

Thanks

you can get away with just the dist. wires and loom are optional. you have to buy them for the dsII, anyway

rebuilt DSII plus new caps(yes 2 caps) and rotor are going to run close to a $100 then the MSD is around 150.00 plus a coil. your not far away from the DUI price

I suspect that Classic Inlines has a special deal with DUI to get the small six ones specially made or they do the mods themselves. I would imagine they are very close to others they make but there is not enough demand for DUI to sell them theirselves.

What do you mean about PU?

The parts of the DS2 system:
-Distributor main body (this is all you get if you buy one at a parts store)
-Cap Adaptor (unless you go with the 74 mav cap that looks like the old points one and uses the points style wires and screws on)
-Cap and rotor (must get the one that matches the cap)
-Plug wires including the proper coil wire (74 mav cap uses points style wires with the male ends, the DS2 cap uses the HEI style wires that have a female end)
-Coil, in theory the stock coil will work but you would in theory be able to benifit from a more modern coil, there are 100s of options. If you got the petronix flame thrower with your last kit that would work fine.
-Control box or module. This could be the orignal style ford one, they seem to be identified by the color of the gromit the wires come out of and blue seems to be the standard one. These are available at parts stores from about $10-$75. I would stay away from the cheap ones. The $40 ish ones seem to be fine and I dont think there is much benifit to going to the $75 ones. Gm 4 pin HEI module also in parts stores from any 75-80 gm car same price range as the fords, same issues with the cheap ones. If you go this route you have to make your own harness and find some sort of heat sink to mount it on. MSD and other performance boxes. These start a little over $100 bucks new and go up from there. Make sure you get one that is compatible with the DS2 pickup (most seem to be). I dont know how much benifit those would be for a stockish street motor.

While I was typing I missed the other posts....

If you are leaning twards the DUI go for it.
Clean and simple instal. No need for tweaking, it will work out of the box.
You can still run MSD type boxes with it later if you choose to.

My DS2 from kragen cost 35$.

Gm coil is 22$

Accel Super stock coil is about 25$.

Stock Plug wires are like 13$.

Cap, Rotor, and adapter are 20$

That's 111$ for a complete modern ignition system. Sure beats the 500$ DUI price if you ask me.
