Drag Race Maverick

The honing suggestion is a no-no although I'm sure some may risk it. Valve spring configuration must be the same as stock(single, double type with the damper being optional) Spring design is open to interpretation.
The engine has a crank scraper and a wire mesh windage device. We also have the alternator switch.

Couple little things that should help -

You're running too thick of an oil. Most stockers use synthetics on the order of 0-5w and the top runners only run 2 to 3 qts in the system. Yes they're on the verge of oil starvation but that's what it takes.

Another big drag is your full manual valve body. Those things kick up the line pressure far beyond what is reguired for your limited horsepower. A basic RV type shift kit is all you should need.

Lots of drag inside a C4 too. You should look at replacing many of the thrust washers with bearings unless it's already done.

I don't have a rulebook handy right now but can't help but wonder - when NHRA specs piston ring groove width does that require a ring in every groove? I believe at the least you can use some super thin rings with spacers to fit the stock groove.

I thought I would share my progess with all of you...thanks again for all the help!!

On the weekend we made our first pass in the 15's. A 15.88 @ 84 mph.
This came with the discovery of a cam issue that had the timing advanced 23 degrees. We also installed a fresh set of K-Motion valve springs and Crane anti-pumpup lifters. The day was very hot with lots of humidity. Also found an easy 50lb weight reduction by replacing the driver!!

At the track, people love the 6.

Now you're cooking. You said plugged PCV. You do realize you are reducing some of the air flow. The dirt trackers with carb limitations are not getting all of their air thru the carb. Some of it comes in under the carb. This might be a problem with the carb setting so close to the middle ports.

This may be the last post for the year as we do not plan any further track time. We may take the car to the chassis dyno to test a couple of things, including a Duraspark II distributor to replace the first generation unit.

This weekend we finally managed a sub-index run of 15.75 sec @ 83mph. This came about after shaving another 20lbs (car now weighs 2580), and backing timing off to 38 degrees total. Also did a band adjustment to the C4 as the shifts were getting a little soft.

Thanks again for everyone's help!!

OK, one more post on track results for this year. We had the car out two weeks ago under ideal atmospheric conditions. No changes from the last trip other than switching back to the lightweight jockey!! It ran 15.39 at 85.22 mph. We are now 4 tenths under the National Index for V/SA and compared to the first passes last fall, we've gained a full second and 5 mph in the 1/4. :D
